'Mom, I'm in trouble': Grande Prairie woman faces decade in Thai prison

Brittney Schneider charged with vandalism for spray painting graffiti on ancient wall

Canadian Brittney Lorretta Katherine Schneider and Briton Furlong Lee face up to 10 years in prison for allegedly spraying paint on an ancient wall in northern Thailand. 0:36
One of two tourists charged with vandalism for spray painting graffiti on an ancient red-brick wall in northern Thailand is from Grande Prairie, Alta.

Thai police said early Friday they had arrested a Canadian and Briton — Brittney Schneider and Furlong Lee, respectively, both 23 — at a guest house in Chiang Mai. They are being held at the provincial court and face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty.

Schneider's mother, Tara, told CBC News she'd received a frantic phone call from her daughter.

"Mom, I'm in trouble," she said her daughter told her. "I spray painted an ancient wall and I'm going to prison. And I'm scared."

Closed-circuit TV footage allegedly shows the pair spray-painting a wall near the Tha Phae Gate, the main entrance to the city's old town.

"They admitted to the crime," Police Major Anon Cherdchutrakulthong told Reuters. "When people visit somewhere they should know not to [leave] graffiti."

Anon said they do not yet have a lawyer, adding that the young man and woman showed signs of having been intoxicated.

Tara said her daughter "made a mistake. This is out of character for her."

"I just told her, 'What's done is done,'" she said.

Bail money has been sent to Thailand so Brittney can be released on Monday, she said. After that, her daughter will have to remain in Thailand until her trial, which could be in two months, she said.

"She has to face it. She's sorry for what she done. But I said stay strong and breathe and go through it."

Schneider said she asked her daughter why she did what she did.

"She said she's ashamed of herself," Schneider said. "It was an act of being intoxicated."

Tara said Canadian officials told her there is nothing they can do to change local laws in Thailand.

She said she plans to fly to Thailand to support her daughter while she awaits trial.

In addition to 10 years in jail, police said, the young tourists could face fines of up to one million baht, or $40,035 Cdn.

Video footage obtained by Reuters showed the words "Scouser Lee" painted on the wall in an apparent reference to the English city of Liverpool. Thai police did not confirm Lee's hometown.

Well isn’t this a perfect teachable moment in ones life as a parent?

On one hand she decided to not only spray paint stuff, she chose an ancient temple. On the other hand.... well there is no other hand.

The thai’s don’t fuck around with their punishment.

If her folks get the govt to help leverage her case, they will be doing a disservice to this woman’s personal growth as an adult who is being held accountable.

Your thoughts?

they won't go to jail for this, I suspect a hefty fine and a 10 year travel ban.

When you travel, you have to be respectful. You’re a guest in their country. I spend a lot of time in Amsterdam, so I see dickhead tourists all the time. The Dutch are actually actively trying to discourage so many people from coming to Amsterdam and I don’t blame them. Assholes get drunk, start fights, harass the girls in the windows, piss on cars, buildings, in the canals, puke everywhere, try to swim in the canals, just generally act like complete fucking wankers.

I have no sympathy for people like that. Being drunk isn’t an excuse. If you can’t drink without acting like a dumbass, don’t drink. Yeah, this girl made a mistake and 10 years in prison (if she gets that) is rough, but you can’t go to another country and vandalize their buildings, especially not an ancient and culturally important one. If you invited me into your house and I drank too much and sprayed graffiti all over your walls, you’d be pissed too. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Whatever happens, I’m sure this girl won’t do something stupid like that ever again.

They're lucky they didn't do this in Suadi Arabia. Where they are known to cut off people's hands for shoplifting.

She's a handsome fellow, isn't she?

Does anyone feel the slightest bit of remorse for these people? I hope they serve every day of the sentence.

Another great line - the mother said: "Canadian officials told her there is nothing they can do to change local laws in Thailand."

In the first place Duh, and in the second place why on earth would Canada wish to fight with Thailand about an anti-graffiti anti-vandalism of historic sites law?

Damn right, Jack. I have had damned bastards deface my walls before. For burglary, graffiti and vandalism, I believe in the expansion of capital punishment. Her ten year maximum sentence is way too lenient.

A hefty fine , and a night in jail is good enough providing you show remorse and apologize!

Justin the Groper will do anything, even offer himself to take her place. The mother just paid $6000.00 for bail.

I think your buddy Justin's position was just expressed through his consul - he can't change the law.

10 years is the max sentence. The "first time offender who didn't know any better" sentence will be far lighter. And there's likely nothing the Canadian government can do except try and persuade the Thai government to go easy.

Yet again, I'm revolted by the lynch mob attitude of the guys on this board. Yes, these people were idiots. They're not the first idiots in the world. Certainly not the first 23 year old tourist idiots. 10 years is far too harsh in any sane justice system. And the guy throwing a hissy fit because he gets graffiti on his place too and he'd like these people flogged or killed is below my contempt.

Send them to jail... not one fuck given here. Want to travel to another country and fuck up their shit, then be ready to pay the piper? Young or not, every kid down to 5yrs old knows it's not right to write on walls (designated walls excused). 23yrs isn't young. Only way to learn from this is a stern lesson in "don't fuck with other people's shit" take the jail or take the cane.

The "ugly Canadian. Then there were those Canadians who stripped naked on a sacred mountain in Nepal a couple of years ago. They forget that very few or no country is as tolerant of bad behavior as Canada.

You fucking bunch of hypocrites....

Here most of you break the law by paying for sex, but God forbid any of you fuckers get charge.

Further more even of you don't get charge none of you would ever admit to partaking on the hobby. Some of you guys Im sure would even committe murder if you knew you were about to be exposed.

The rule of law is the rule of law...

Just remember what Jesus said: "He who os free of sin (an imoral act) cast the first stone" ( Jesus to me was just a wise man).

Have some compassion, she made a mistake and will pay a very heavy price for it. One rhing about her is she is not denying the crime or making excuses for her behavior.

Jesus reacted violently when people were just trying to make
some honest money in the temple court. You can imagine how
forgiving He would have been if that chick got caught spraying
inside the temple.
