Boom!

For over a quarter of a century, Elizabeth Warren has described herself as a Native American. When recently asked to provide evidence of her ancestry, she pointed to an unsubstantiated claim on an 1894 Oklahoma Territory marriage license application by her great-great grand uncle William J. Crawford that his mother, O.C. Sarah Smith Crawford, Ms. Warren’s great-great-great grandmother, was a Cherokee.
After researching her story, it is obvious that her “family lore” is just fiction.

As I pointed out in my article here on Sunday, no evidence supports this claim. O.C. Sarah Smith Crawford had no Cherokee heritage, was listed as “white” in the Census of 1860, and was most likely half Swedish and half English, Scottish, or German, or some combination thereof. (Note, the actual 1894 marriage license makes no claim of Cherokee ancestry.)

But the most stunning discovery about the life of O.C. Sarah Smith Crawford is that her husband, Ms. Warren’s great-great-great grandfather, was apparently a member of the Tennessee Militia who rounded up Cherokees from their family homes in the Southeastern United States and herded them into government-built stockades in what was then called Ross’s Landing (now Chattanooga), Tennessee–the point of origin for the horrific Trail of Tears, which began in January, 1837.This new information about Ms. Warren’s true heritage came as a direct result of a lead provided to me by William Jacobson over at Legal Insurrection, who in turn had received the information from one of his readers. Jacobson, who has questioned Warren’s explanation for her law faculty listing, calls this discovery “the ultimate and cruelest irony” of the Warren Cherokee saga.

It's no surprise that horrifying racism has existed in her family for centuries. She's just the latest incarnation.

There were Jew-loving Nazi's as well, what's your point?
This has nothing to do with her right now.

That there is no point in this thread.
Sure there is. Warren took pride in her ancestry. Now if this is true perhaps shame would because better idea.

I dunno.... Maybe that it's ridiculous to hold Elizabeth Warren responsible for what her long dead ancestors did under the reign of notorious Indian killer Andrew Jackson.
She's the one driving the story. There's no one else to blame.

No, Trump is driving this story with his insults.
Ah, no. All Trump has done, he gave her a shovel to dig her own political grave. And dig she did, enthusiastically.

That would be true, although it is something all sorts of groups to the left seem to want to do to others.

However, none of that is the point, which rather is that Senator Warren decided that she wanted to be a Native American, she certainly did not object when HLS used her self identifier to avoid federal pressure regarding faculty diversity.

Further to the best of my knowledge (or at least she hasn't talked about it) she is still apparently incurious enough about her ancestry that she hasn't employed (a) professional genealogist(s) to take her ancestry in the U.S. back as far as it can.

That at least to me seemingly is a statement that it's all about I want to check a box, rather than I'm genuinely interested in the past and how my family fits into it.

She must be guilty because she's made so little effort to clear her name.

Harvard Law School, her disinterest in, and her inability to affect — or her entire ignorance of — their doings with respect to Federal paperwork I'll give you.

However your regrettable opening sentence is overstated and malicious, unless you're taking it on yourself to deny that anyone in her family ever told her there was Indian blood in their lineage.

Don't I recall some similarly overblown stuff about 'proving' someone was 'qualified' to be a 'genuine' Son of Italy? Here we go againm.

Reminds me of that 23 and Me or Ancestry.com commercial where the dude who thinks he has German ancestry turns out to be genetically Scottish. Fact is, people often think they have a certain ancestry which turns out to be untrue.
