Tracing a "Textfree" App.

I've been using one on my phone .It's a company phone ,and I delete the app(not the number) each time after I'm done using it. How much digging would our 3rd party IT department have to do to recover the texts, short of having my phone in their hand? Could they at all? Is there anything that might trigger them to take a closer look by me simply using it?

You indicated it's a company phone. Do you know if they are running any type of endpoint management software on it? i.e. Symantec, Sophos, Blackberry, Ivanti, etc. It's not very common today , but it's certainly a growing part of the IT market.

If they are, depending on the software suite they will know you've loaded unauthorized software and if you've changed any phone wireless or security settings <-- Any exceptions are typically alerted and logged on the management console. They will also have a log of who you called and texted (using the authorized apps), your current software versions, etc.

If you loaded a texting app, used it and then deleted the app, it's not likely that end-point software will know who and what was texted (I'm assuming the app talks to the vendors servers directly using data), unless it uses the standard SMS protocol. It is possible a log or similar remnants of the deleted app could still be on the phone and yes endpoint tools will allow the admin to look through your phone remotely. But most IT people simply don't have the time to do this.

BUT ........ your adding and deleting of a texting app on a regular basis will be logged and is obviously suspicious in-of-itself. Your activities will eventually draw attention depending how security sensitive the company is. <-- Again, if your company doesn't use endpoint software, they won't know anything without touching the phone.

Excellent info from Promo!
To the OP - for your peace of mind, get a separate phone for your personal use and leave the company phone strictly for that, work.

Two off-topic notes for those that want to be security conscious:

1) If it's a company phone, some companies will load tracking apps. They do this for a variety of legitimate reasons: security, tracking company vehicles/assets, verifying you are doing your job etc. It's a grey area in Cdn law, but your employer should tell you they are doing this and it should be in your signed employment contract. But several of my customers don't disclose and simply terminate the employee with severance if they see something they don't like.

2) If you have an Android phone and linked your Google Email account to the phone, Google will track your location. You can go to your Email account and see a map of where you have been. It was defaulted-on, but there was a ton of complaints and Google said they would default-off the feature (I haven't checked).

The issue: This information could be used by insurance companies, or LE, or your wife against you, so be aware .......

This is what I have done in the past..

I opened an account with VOIP.MS, got a #, and installed an app, that let me text through the VOIP #. I could also make calls using the # as well.

Then I would delete the app as I needed too, erasing anything.

Now if your company has any policies on the phone, then there may be an issue..

How do you go to your Google Email account and see that map of where you have been?
Also does this apply to non Android phones like TracFone?

I did a quick search and it doesn't appear possible. Looked for a google app for non android phones and didn't find anything. But I don't know for sure.

This is an older thread however, I was interested in VOIP.MS.
Does the number used count as voip through sms, would people be able to detect it is not a phone number from a mobile provider, similar to how textplus and other alternative phone numbers work?

Echoing what Promo says.

My partner just took a retainer for a senior executive who was calling escorts on his company phone. The CEO called him in and asked him to explain himself. He lied. He was fired for lying. There goes a few hundred thousand $$$ a year plus the dude's pension, plus his marriage. My partner doesn't think the lawsuit will pay off with anything but a nominal settlement.

Why TF would you use a company phone for personal calls??!!??!!

We can when we search the number against carrier look-ups.

Yes and no...

One of the numbers I have shows as a non common provider, the other still shows that it's from a cell provider that I ported over to Voip.ms
