Big mistake if he does, I hope he likes playing in Siberia. Omsk cannot pay him what he's currently making with the Leafs. And the kickback culture of the KHL will be a huge culture shock to him after playing in Toronto. He'll also have to deal with the harrowing air travel, the Russians aren't sticklers for air safety. I wish him luck, he'll need it.

If another team signs Nylander for $8 mil per the Leafs get compensation. 2 first rounders, a second and third.

He may be worth 8 mil at some point but he's sure not worth anything close to that right now. He's invisible half the time. The kid has talent I know but signing Mathews and Marner has to be a much larger priority.
It would be great if they could trade him for a solid dman making around 5 mil.

I like a trade to Minnesota for Matt Dumba. Dumba is $30 million for 5 years. $6 mil per year sits well in the Leafs cap.

Kapanen fits in well with AM, he's faster and goes to the net. Nylander is the better passer but AM doesn't seem affected.

Stanley Cup contenders, hardly. They don't hit and their defense is weaker than last year. Trading Nylander is becoming a necessity, I tend to get Dumba mixed up with the Jets Trouba. Does he hit like Trouba?

Btw AM has been in contact with Nylander, what a captain should do, but Nylander is not listening.

Trouba's contract expires after this season, he becomes an RFA. Leafs don't need another unsigned RFA situation. Dumba already has a contract which is why he is perfect for the Leafs.

I don't think the trade value of Nylander is as high as many Leaf fans may think. When's the last time an unsigned rfa traded for another player(s) of significance ? I doubt any team would give up a top 2 d man for Nylander who apparently thinks he's worth between 7-8 mil per year. Trading him for Trouba would be like trading a headache for a future toothache, although Trouba fills a void (partially).

The best scenario would be to sign him to a trade friendly contract, i.e long term under 6.5m per with no no trade clause. Get him to the line with Matthews and bump up his stats. Then we may have a very tradable commodity for a top d man.

I am sure Nylander and his camp know this. Why take a home town discount so that he'll be easier to trade. Take a home town discount and then be shipped out is the worse thing for Nylander. He loses income and he loses the team. Could be the reason why there is a stalemate.

Hometown discount isn't applicable here, he's a 6 - 6.5 million dollar player. The leafs haven't looked very good so far but that is nothing nylander can fix, a trade is the best option.

Well, Shanahan has openly suggested players should take less money for the sake of the team so even if it's not called a hometown discount it is a discount nevertheless that is asked of him.

I disagree, the Leafs seem to be offering what he's worth. No way dubas is caving on this, imagine him walking into the GM's meetings after way overpaying for nylander, he wouldn't get a seat, other GM's would be furious.

He tied for 109th in goal-scoring in the NHL last season.

He was 59th in assists, 66th in points, and was 79th in points per game. steve simmons

The point of discussions should start with : what would be considered fair market value of a long term extension for Nylander ?

If the consensus is between 6.25 to 6.75 Mil, anything less offered by the Leafs would represent a home town discount. In any negotiations involving large sums of money though, what's a fair deal isn't as relevant as the strength of bargaining positions. The side that wants a deal more will cave in eventually. The Leafs seem to have an upper hand at this moment.

With every Leaf win and every AM goal with Nylander absent , he becomes more and transparent....and by extension Expendable! While he may want a long term contract, how much is he making now.....exactly ZERO until he signs and laces up the skates. Just sayin'!.....before you know it, it will be #WillieWho...December will be here faster then he thinks!

GTA & Thereabouts...
With the current goal-fest (both for and against), I wonder if AM and Marner start to think they're better off without Nylander? A D-Man might be better if they want to win.
