I am considering applying. What do you do? Just show up?

I presume my status as a blue-collar worker will not impede me as long as I buy the tuxedo and act and look like a gent and toast the Queen according to the doc on Netflix as we are all brothers

It would give me a place to go on the road and seems like a great place to meet people for business reasons as you build character which is their main theme

Usually a friend sponsors you for membership who will vouch for your character, do you know a member? If no, go to your local lodge and ask for information. Members won't ask you to join (it's a rule), you have to approach them. "join with you own free will and accord".

Are you already a member of a service organization? Do you attend church? <-- not essential but either/both would help if you don't have a member to sponsor you. Christian belief in God is "required", although you don't have to be a regular church attender, just a believer.

In the older days you had to be a "builder". i.e. an engineer, architect or tradesperson. That no longer applies, the focus is on brotherhood, character and service. Yes, it's a great way to make business contacts, although that's not the focus. It really is a good group of people. Once you pass your three degrees you are eligible to be a Shriner who I believe are an amazing service organization and get to drive cool go-karts.

Yes, they have their secrets, guarded traditions and oaths. I assure you there is nothing nefarious or evil going on. It's all based upon some very cool time-honoured traditions worth preserving.

I'm not a Freemason but I have a friend who is. I know for certain you can't just show up at a lodge and ask to sign up. The way it works is a member of a Masonic Lodge first vouches for you. He will take you out to a pub or to a barbeque, etc., and introduce you to other members.

You sort of become what the biker clubs call a "hangaround." If the other members like you, they will introduce you to more members and, eventually, you may be asked to join the Freemasons if they think you're a good fit. An anonymous vote is taken at the Lodge by way of marbles being placed in a bowl. A white marble is a "yes" vote, a black marble is a "no" vote. One black marble in the bowl and you will not be admitted to the Lodge. This is literally where the term "black-balled" comes from.

If you pass the admittance then prepare to work hard, spend time and study ... there is a Freemasons for Dummies book that covers many basic items and is a good resource, read it before you approach any lodge... this is work the first few years and it is time consuming as the learning curve will be steep, lots of books to read plus there is a $$ commitment as well.

No not a member but I have relatives who are.

Watch the Simpsons episode about the Stonecutters. Freemasons is basically the same thing; be prepared to get spanked a lot.

I used the words "go to your local lodge and ask for information" intentionally. The procedure to join depends on the jurisdiction and sometimes the individual lodge.

As mentioned above the easiest way is to know a member, but not everyone that wants to join already knows someone (most members are low profile). Some lodges when you go in to ask for information may ask a few questions and then set you up with a member(s) for a more in-depth conversation. Being a member of another service organization or a church goer will help with initially evaluating your character, but the Masons are a brotherhood, not a service organization. That's why you see lots of police officers and firemen as members. Consider that point (brotherhood) when you are talking.

Some lodges have open houses which are used for introductions. Other lodges use Email and set aside 1 night a month for people to come in for a chat.

Goggle a couple of local lodges and if they have a website, joining info is usually supplied.

https://grandlodge.on.ca/index.php/official-website/about-freemasonry/how-can-i-join

BTW, if you main goal is to meet people for business contacts and social activities, please instead consider The Rotary Club or Lions Club.

Your status as a blue-collar worker is irrelevant. Within the lodge chambers, everyone is equal -- regardless of age, ethnicity, race, religion, employment, or status.

Also, you don't need a tuxedo. A suit is more than fine. You are correct -- building character is the principal theme. Their mandate is to make good men better.

Not entirely true. You do need to believe in a God, but it doesn't have to be the Christian God. Lodges are non-secular. There are several brothers, in my own lodge, who are Jews and Muslims. Belief is all that's required.

Correct. Atheists are not allowed to join.
