Ottawa tornados

Two confirmed tornados ripped through the nation's capital region yesterday, almost 200,000 were without power last night. About half still without power now. Luckily so far no deaths.

I was at work when they hit which is ironically about 13km from both tornados even though in opposite directions. I had no idea and did not see them, just thought it was one hellacious storm. Needless to say I lucked out, many others not nearly as lucky. The city is somewhat paralyzed, traffic lights out are snarling traffic, mostly on south and west end. Gas stations with power are few and those lucky to be open have crazy long lines.

Strange times in Ottawa area last couple days, folks all pulling together and helping out.

The fact that a relatively minor disaster can paralyze the capital is somewhat unnerving. I mean, tornadoes can be pretty terrible for those who bear the brunt, but they're a fiercely localized storm.

Actually this was a little more than localized. One of the tornados took out one of the main hydro transformer stations that powers other stations. "The twister devastated the provincial utility’s transformer station in Merivale in west-end Ottawa, one of the major electricity supply points to the city." I heard reports that the result is worse than the ice storm of 98.

That's actually exactly what I mean by localized. Almost like a precision strike that just happened to hit a vulnerable target that itself crippled the city.

Some of the video was terrifying. We always thought Canada was safe, especially this side of Canada.

We might get power back in the next couple of days. The freezer seems to have kept everything frozen, so I'm leaving it alone. The worst part was not having cell reception. Our network was down, so I couldn't even find out what was going on. I got that back yesterday. No batteries for the 20 year old radio. It's coming along, but the map of outages is huge. I'm right in the middle of it, near the power distribution node that went down.

Ottawa base.
My parents house got hit right in the middle of the Gatineau tornado, more than 30K in repair it seem. Roof is half gone half the windows are shatter. No one was at home when it happen thankfully.
Most of my friends in the Ottawa/Gatineau region still dont have power 36 hrs later.
