So they want to build a MASSIVE sign beside the Gardiner

Just heard about this on the drive into work this morning.

Apparently, it's 3 times larger than any current sign along the Gardiner. 5 stories high and a giant TV screen that will pummel out ads 24/7.

Just when you thought that the City of Toronto had reached maximum stupidity, you read something like this.

Wow, just what this world needs, more light and visual pollution in the form of giant lit up TV screens to blast ads at you as you're trying to drive.

Correction, the billboard proposal has not been approved.

It is Councillor Mark Grimes and whoever is the property owner of the proposed site on Bestobell Road (Pristine Printing).
The proposed sign is massive with the face being more than three times larger than normally permitted and standing only six meters away from the Gardner (City by-laws state electronic billboards must be at least 400 metres from the highway).

Correct, not yet approved.

But, wondering if they manage to get their variance. And wondering what the hell Grimes is thinking and why?

I just hate the signs and the associated pollution that are already there. I remember after that big rain storm and power was knocked out and they had to gradually ramp up power usage, they had all the signs switched off. It was nice to drive the Gardiner with no fucking signs on.

Yes, they are numbskulls, but the complaints I’m hearing aren’t to do with the act of slashing council. In fact, many I’ve talked to agree they number of councillors should be lower. The complaints are about how he’s doing it. If Ford wanted to slash the councillors after the election there would not be as much of an uproar.

Makes as much sense as putting up about 8 of these things next to the airport along 40 and 427
Ticket for using a 4 inch cellphone, but hey here's a 100 foot TV to stare at
But if it makes money it's ok I guess

they should focus more on removing those tents and grafitti and garbage left by those living under the gardiner without paying taxes. I don't know what they are contributing to society.

Grimes was most often a Ford numbskull. The Sign Variance Committee turned him and it down.

Unanimously.

At least the condo dwellers won't need any interior lights with that giant screen right outside their window. Just like that condo near the CNE that has the cell tower right outside.

This.

The courts are simply saying give it the time it deserves to go through the system and Ford is basically saying "fuck you, I'm not waiting, I want these guys gone before the election, it's my way , I'm not waiting, number 33 please!"

Yes, that should have been the right way to go about it.

Then again, this is Toronto City Hall.

What is truly unbelievable is the effort put forth into the resistance to this move. When the hell did Toronto City Hall worked so hard on anything. Where was the sense of urgency?

I think that is all we really need to know.

Maybe Toronto residents have gotten so used to the bullshit, when something or someone actually takes decisive action, people recoil in horror at the sight of an official actually doing something.

If Ford had waited and did this properly, then it is conceivable that Toronto City Hall would have gone back to doing nothing, except for fighting the provincial government. We lived here long enough to know this would be absolutely true. Then the leftist on council will blame Ford for dropping this bombshell onto the city as the real reason why nothing ever gets done.

When you fire someone, just fire them.

They deserve it.

Althopugh I feel differently about the history and future of Council, you've neatly summed up what Ford should have done to get his plan through with the least amount of fuss and feathers: Pick an appropriate time, and talk to the people involved.

This latest example of his family pattern of doing things with maximum disruption, stirring up the most possible opposition along the way was a major cause of the dysfunction in Council ever since amalgamation brought all the various suburban councillors with their varied concerns unwillingly downtown to 100 Queen West.

In fact apart from occasionally having to deal with drunkenness, drug use and declarations about pussy-eating on Council time, our City Council manages to deal with and dispose of more business in any given year, at less cost and provide more service to its citizens than either senior level of government. It just gets more attention, because its more local, and more connected with our daily lives.

Was your trash not collected this morning? Again? Who ya gonna call?

There is no good timing for this. So get just 'Er done because it has to be done at some point.

That is what I hear him saying.

I disagree. There is a good time to do this and it’s not when there is an election within 6 weeks time. It’s basically any other time would have been good enough.

Two of these electronic signs on Hwy 400/69. Just before the two large electronic signs is a warning that Hwy 400/69 turns into a two lane HW and to be cautious. lol

Sadly, this is the case with politicians who are under the gun to produce anything in 4 years. All governments try to speed things through without careful consideration.
