I thought it would be fun to have a thread to post stuff about what Toronto used to be like and things that were staples in your childhood and youth growing up in Toronto. Now in my mid 40's, there are little weird things I miss.

For example, I always remember this playing at the wee hours of the morning in the 80's:

(fast forward to about the 19:42 mark and it might really jog your memory)

Anyone remember taking the old red TTC trains where the lights would turn off sometimes? 1:30 mark in this video.

Great thread. Another late night Toronto classic was the “All Night Show” with “Chuck the Security Guard” (Chas Lawther) taking over a tv station and providing unscripted talk, shows, contests, and weird short films.

What years did this run from? I don't remember this at all.

I think it was late 70’s until early 80’s. The first time I caught it, it was so amateurish and off the wall that it almost seemed like a security guard and his friend really did take over a tv station during his night shift (which was the format of the show). It was great.

Edit: looked it up and it only ran one year 1980. “Chuck” took over CFMT which was then known as “MTV” before the music channel (MTV) had even started.

For some reason that made me think of Ed the sock. I used to love the intro to his show cause it showed Toronto streets at night and a shot of a street cleaner. I don't know why but I always liked that intro.

Could only find later seasons/episodes with new intro:

That was another great show. I always wondered if “Triumph the insult comic dog” on Late Night was inspired by Ed the Sock.

Back in the old days, people knew how to spell the word "nostalgia". Just sayin'.

Anybody remember CFNY back in the glory days when they were truly cutting edge? ...with David Marsden as the programming director (also one of the dj’s). Was available across North America via satellite in the early years and was hugely influential in forming the “alternative radio” format. First time I head U2 was on this station and that was before their first album came out and when they booked into small venues. No other Toronto station was playing eg: the Sex Pistols or anything that wasn’t mainstream. The DJ’s were given free reign to do their thing.

and here's the first video played on MuchMusic when it launched on August 31st 1984

Remember “JD Roberts” as an early VJ? And here he is decades later as “John Roberts”, Chief Whitehouse correspondent for Fox News, lobbing softballs at Trump. ...SAD. LOL!

Of course...I have multiple playlists of various formats that are exclusively CFNY material:
e.g. SilverCrown Top 50 of 85
CFNY Greatest Music Of All Time Version 1982 *work in progress*

For those who are interested, here's a link to most of the CFNY Hit Lists

heh...he was more impressive in his role in The New Music with Jeanne Beker. Still not bad for someone who started out interviewing musicians.

Toronto used to have some really good local-centric TV back in the day.

Now, it's all just shit and (so called) reality shows. I miss the old City TV before it was sold to CTV (or Bell or Rogers or whoever). They had some great content and personalities you liked. Gone are the days.

Absolutely. It’s was radio at its finest. In my opinion when radio is done well, there is no better medium. When it’s done average and poorly it’s like dog food. After CFNY went corporate, a little shitty station in Burlington applied the same idea of getting really good djs to program the music and we got Energy 108 in the mid 90’s. THAT was a hell of a station.

Then...they sold and it went corporate.

Noting against corporations but they play to the lower end of the middle and suck the energy out of great radio.

These days I listen to KCSN FM, a college station in Northridge California. GREAT music and it’s all music centric. No wacky morning zoo shit, just great music mix and no commercials. Google them, you can listen online at their website of App.

I’ll never count radio out. Just when you thin it’s a dinosaur, some talented group of people come along and shine like a beacon but that doesn’t happen very often
