For storage of wealth and insurance. Liquidity should not
be a problem. People who buy gold generally just put it
away and don't want to use it. I would carry my gold coins with
me when I was fleeing my country as a refugee.

Never been to the Bullion Mart, do they stock Roman coins? Saves me a trip to NYC or Antwerp Belgium.

Mississauga, GTA, Ontario.
Do most people collect gold coins? I wonder if certain places accept them as some sort of payment.
I’ve never even seen a gold coin. Are they the same in both canada and USA?
Anyone have a picture?

It is usually considered that the Canadian Maple Leafs are of the highest in purity and quality.

You can purchase from the bank branch, on-line Scotia Meccado, E-bay, the Canadian Royal Mint web-site, post office, and other places.
There are some dealers around as well. Also, look at some jewelers too.

If you wish to purchase and keep off shore look at sgpmx.com.

There are some people on Kijiji who also sell.

You can see a picture here at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Gold_Maple_Leaf.

Coin collecting is an interesting hobby.

Gold & Silver New Bullion Coins in Toronto

I have also used the Bullion Mart: 27 Queen Street East, Suite 1104 416-928-0707.

Bullion Mart is an authorized dealer for the Royal Canadian Mint, and the prices are reasonable.

Currently silver is at a very low cost relative to gold. There is an interesting 'sense of wealth' of having a leather bag full of 1 ounce silver coins, but it does not cost a lot. The heft of a 1 ounce coin does feel like real money ...and they are great for flipping.

One ounce bars are also available and they are cheaper than coins with a much lower spread between the buying (bid) and selling (offering) prices at coin dealers.

The Bank of Nova Scotia is also reputable but they require a lot of paper work.

IF you want to make a significant investment in physical precious metals, you need to look at larger sizes of bars (or coins) and make certain you are getting a competitive price.

I bank with CIBC and with the app, I can have coins or bullion delivered at home! Check it out.

Also, you can Order them online directly from the Canadian Mint (mint.ca).
