It should hopefully get even better. North American farmers are growing annual bumper crops and the beef herd is growing as a result of cheap feed.

probably Chinese and Mexican tariffs on US beef means less Canadian imports into the US. So cheaper beef for us.

What is going on! It's not supposed to be like this!

300g to 350g striploin steaks for about $7!
I usually buy strip loin for $6.99 a pound its not uncommon. Loblaws last week had extra lean ground meat for $3.49 a pound. They rotate the specials. Walmart had also last week AAA ribeye steaks for $6.99 which I prefer much more over strip loin.

Those are lower grade steaks and not prime steaks. I've seen them and they lack marbling. The best steaks are behind the butcher counter. Even better you get the best steaks from local independent butchers.

Hey, I wouldn't mind having a $7 steak every night. A true carnivore doesn't care!

A local butcher nearby closed down a year ago and I stopped having quality steaks. They were the best.

I suppose it beats paying $50 for a steak and potato at the Keg. Steak is easy to make and cheaper done by yourself.

Exactly, if you have got the knack, cheaper cuts of meat, skirt steak, flank steak etc can be rendered into something very delicious on the home grill for far less than restaurant fair. A nice T-bone, porterhouse or strip loan steak grilled at home to your licking is the gold standard.

A $7 steak at a supermarket you are paying for what you get. Find yourself a good independent butcher. A very good one knows the source of his meat and has a good relationship with the farmers and the meat tastes so much better. Today I paid just over $50 for a just shy of 3lb 40 day aged A+++ top grade Tomahawk steak, its going on the BBQ later this week and done right will be the best thing my guests have put in their mouth this year.. Nothing beats a good butcher and if you cant find one I can refer you to one.

There is one I know near Summerhill, they are good, but are they overpriced?

The trade wars are definitely a factor. The US has a surplus of meat because of tariffs (they’re exporting far less). There was a thread about some alt-right groups going on all beef diets to piss off the “lefties” - but this is driven by economics - the Trump base could never afford to even think that if prices weren’t low. Another indicator - Pork bellies hit an almost two year low late August. The hurricane may help prices by taking some supply off market, if only temporarily.

At supermarkets, you need to be careful that you’re not buying steaks that haven’t been aged and are kind of tasteless - that’s what happens when there is a glut. Pale pink and tasteless because they’re just butchering as many as possible and packing the meat as quickly as possible.

Right there with you. It’s only been over the past 5 yrs that I’ve been into eating the whole animal and ethically, I feel great about it. Got my hands on a few french cooking books then and have been exploring all the different cuts and offering of the animal. I think more people should do it, there’s a lot of delight in picking up something that’s cheap and not something most people will try and making it into a delicious dish.

Hahaha.
Not about women, not about sports, bring on a convo about steak to create a thread where gents are in agreement.

I'm a rib steak guy myself, boneless when possible. Turn half your BBQ on high but place the steaks on the other half. Takes a little more time but it's well worth the wait!

Meaning that they are tough. I bought some AAA ribs and filets from Costco the other week. The filets were pretty good but the ribs were tough. And they were not very cheap.

Have the prices come down at restaurants? Going to the Octagon for my son's birthday. $70 for a 12oz filet. $60 for a 16oz. ribeye.

We have reduced our beef consumption to once every two weeks. I believe that is consistent throughout the population. Proven by the amount of advertising the beef industry is doing. Also tariffs and regulations are not helping.
