Why would the Maple Leafs want to trade Kadri?
He's on an extremely team friendly contract, with term (3 more seasons, cap hit of $4.5Mm).
Kadri also has a modified NTC in his contract.
For all those on this thread that value "grit", Nazem possesses more of it than most any other Toronto player.
The man has nifty mittens, and plays tough minutes vs. other teams top lines.
He's one of the last players I would consider trading.
Exactly! He has become a player that every GM's in the league want on their teams! I remembered when Kadri was signed with his last contract everyone thought the Leafs were out of their mind. Thanks to Babcock,Kadri is a different player today. BTW,I didn't think of this idea. Ask...Nick Kypreos!

The Leafs are now 7-3 without "the franchise". The 4 most important players are Andersen, Rielly, Marner, Kadri and Tavares. Did I forget anyone?
I would not put Kadri ahead of Matthews. Matthews in and Kadri injured would be an even much better team. You already forgot Matthews was leading the league after 10 games when he got injured.

Matthews in and Andersen out probably Leafs would suffer since Andersen playing like an MVP right now and Sparks is Sparks.

Matthews in and Rielly out would be interesting. They'll probably be just as good since Andersen is making the defense look adequate and Rielly is not really known for his defense but rather offense and Matthews is the better offensive player.

Matthews in and Tavaras out, well Tavaras plays better defense but Matthews has better overall offense so let's call it even.

Matthews in and Marner out, well this one can be debated one is a superior shooter and one is a superior passer.
Marner also kills penalties.

So I would say only Andersen is more important than Matthews. Andersen is the MVP of the Leafs. Kadri is last of these listed in importance.

Ok so why do you want to rid of him to save cap space?

What's helped the Leafs this year is the emergence of Morgan Reilly. If the Leafs secure a playoff spot and a first round matchup with the Bruins looms, don't be surprised if they swing a deal for Drew Doughty. The Kings could be out of it by early March.
Hmmm, interesting. Would make sense. Playoff rental. This is the only year with Matthews Marner for cheap. Go for it. Doughty would be ideal. Won't be cheap though but we're talking winning 16 playoff games. 4th line centers cost a 2nd rounder the last 2 years. Imagine what Doughty would cost for a playoff run. But don't think they'll need to give up a 2nd for a 4th line center this year. Lindholm looks like he can do the job and Babs seems to have confidence in him.

Marner certainly is primed for a home town discount. Did you not see him when he was 4? Even then he wanted to play for Leafs. There is no way he would risk being traded

The whole point of managing cap is paying less than player is worth. Kadri definetely is good value. They are rich in center? Really? They are fricken playing Gautier. He's a stiff albeit a big one. And yes Leafs need more toughness and not give away the only one they have.

It is Marleau they have to dump at 6.25 mill. Without Marleau for next year easily can sign Nylander Matthews Marner. Perhaps Kap and Gardiner also. He was brought in for vet leadership but they have Tavaras for that now
Bad news is that Marleau has one more year to go with the Leafs. In a perfect situation you would like to see Gauthier's game to pick up and improve as he moved along. He then can become a 'new' Kadri with 'cheaper' cap space. Also, don't forget Nylander can play centre, his natural position.

Is Robidas Island possible. Can Marleau pick up a mysterious ailment? Can he fail his medical like Lupul?

Who else can you think of other than a valuable trade chip in Kad? Are you in a camp that Leafs need to upgrade at the D? If yes,who else is there to trade for a 'good, decent' D? I am not in the camp that Leafs need to improve their D,btw.

You're speaking out of two sides of your mouth. On one side you think he's great and on the other you want him traded. If you think Leafs D is fine then why trade him for a D? Hall got you Larson. What do you think Kadri will get you? Probably a stiff. Nylander will probably not even bring back a grade A defensemen.

I think Leafs should just focus on drafting and developing D for the next few years. They started with a few years of drafting small skilled forwards. They went one year drafting huge defensemen and overage forwards. Don't think any of them will pan out so they are deciding to draft D with more skill now.

I really like how Demott is progressing. He may even be better now than Rielly was at his age.

What about him?
When the Leafs aquired Hyman, I never thought he would pan out but I'm glad I'm wrong. Every night he forchecks and wins pucks for Marner and Tavares. Hyman does things most of us never notice becuase we only notice Matner or Tavares.

Well, ideally it would be great for Leafs if Marleau retired but why would he just leave his 6.25 million behind. He signed for 3 years for a reason. Not 2. I don't see it happening. More likely they put him on Robidas Island. He gets his money and Leafs get their cap relief.

I think most people see and appreciates what Hyman does. Although there are probably those who think he shouldn't be playing in the top 6. Some prob feel he's a 4th liner. Great trade though. He's the best puck retriever along the boards the Leafs have. Babcock thinks in pairs Matthews/Nylander, Tavaras/Marner. Unlike going for the super line that Boston has.

The Leafs can give Marleau a front office job for $6.25 mil. Think outside the box like Dubas.

Boston is a 1 line team. The Leafs can have 2-3 lines that can score. Once Babcock has the last line change, the Leafs shut down Boston's top line. BTW, Bergeron is out for at least 4 weeks.

Shut down Boston's top line? You make it sound so easy. Maybe you should coach. Take Babs job. You didn't see last years playoffs? They were scoring at will. Maybe vs Boston Leafs can create their own super line and try to neutralize and try to beat them with their depth. Play Kadri on LW with Tavaras and Marner. Matthews with Nylander Hyman as a 2nd line with weaker opposition and not have to face Bergeron. Kapanen Marleau on 3rd line with Lindholm.

I was just thinking the same thing. Offer Marleau an executive position with a little juice to entice him. A job where he can work from home wink wink. Call it funny accounting but legal.

Looking at the schedule for the rest of the season Boston will be facing Andersen and not Sparks. And Boston won't be so lucky to catch the tired Leafs off a back to back.
