At 12 yrs old, it’s reached the end of its life. And newer units are more efficient.
Good luck.

Just remember when you're shopping, to calculate the cost per year for your comfort. The next one's not likely to last any longer.

I'm surprised and disappointed to learn that the life of a central air conditioner is only 12 years. I only use the unit about 2 months every year. Anyway, I couldn't stand the heat and humidity and called the original installer to fix. He said he had to replace a capacitor. No big deal. For a "no big deal" I was shocked at the price he charged.

when my unit was ten years old it needed a new capacitor and my guy charged me about $100 all in for the house call

Really? My Lennox is 20 years old and never needed service. This year, we had Enercare look at it and the told us that it was working perfectly. However, they wanted us to replace it because it was 'old', even though it is working as efficiently as a new one.

Both my brother and I had central air installed back in 95 ( 23 years ago ) . Both machines are cheap contractor models . Neither one of us have had any problem with the units . Unlike my neighbours I don't run mine 24-7 . If it's nice outside with no humidity I turn it off .

I do plan on changing the unit next year . Time for an upgrade . My old furnace was installed at the same time . I had to replace it 4 years ago . When my furnace broke down I was lucky that I still had my old 10000 btu window unit ( bought in 89 ) to use . $2000 for a new name brand air conditioner installed next year . I know a guy . My neighbours nephew .

It is virtually impossible nowaday to find a tradesperson willing to come to the house for less than $200. Earlier this Summer I called 5 roofers and 4 of them didn't even bother to return my call. The one that did call back said his minimum is $500.

"Brand name" air conditioners are most likely all made by the same factory. Also, any machine made in the last 20 years is much less durable than older machines. That is why I will never willing surrender my 35 year old GE refrigerator.

Mine died last year, good thing I know a guy who knows a guy, it was just the capacitor too. Simple cheap fix. Imagine how many dishonest repair men take advantage of the unsuspecting and you end up buying a new unit long before you need one.

Yes likely better quality not near as energy efficient.

If you try to cool your whole house 100% of the time then your AC will give you less years of service. If you confine the cool air to certain parts of the house at certain times the AC will work less, cost you less in electricity and last longer. I confine the AC to the living room, dining area, and work area ( desk ) during the daytime. If you have doors in the hallway you can confine the cold air, near mealtime I open the door in the hallway and have ceiling fans to move the cool air to the back of the house. The bedrooms have floor AC units to cool and dehumidify the air. I also have either a ceiling fan or floor fan to move the cool air around in each area. The fans make a big difference.

As far as the AC capacitor goes, if you have some electrical experience then you can change it yourself. I keep a spare around just in case. ( $27.00 ) Be aware that a capacitor can give you a shock as its job is to hold a charge of electricity. If the top of the casing of the capacitor is bulged then this may be but not necessarily an indication that it had stopped functioning.

I've noticed this too. It just means they're in high demand and doing great business. Good time fora young person to get into trades.

Try the Jiffy app. You might get people out for cheaper.

Mine was leaking at the time.
If the AC fan is spinning slow and will not go to full speed, the compressor may be attempting to start but cuts out then it is likely the capacitor. Even if this is not the problem it is a good time to change the capacitor before it totally gives out.

The old fridges are not as energy efficient as the new models but the energy required to manufacture a new machine must be considered, plus the cost to replace a fridge every 5 -10 years.

Funny, the technician who looked at my 20 year old Lennox told me that it was about as efficient as the new units. Efficiency for furnaces and air conditioners has not improved much over the last 20 to 25 years, according to someone I know who does energy audits.

A new capacitor is $15, you can grab them from a motor supplier, just check the web for a local one, or pop out to Etobicoke and go to bills electric and then stop in at e-spa, it’s right around the corner.

I’ve replaced mine twice, plus I installed a hard start kit to help on starting. Hard start was $40.

There are lots of good capacitor how to videos on YouTube, but it’s dead simple. Just make sure to turn the pier off and discharge the old capacitor before you take it out.
