Very sad day indeed. She is and always will be a legend.

Hard to believe she was younger than Tina Turner.

Esteemed songwriters like Otis Redding, Norman Whitfield (The Temptations) and Carole King all wrote songs for her.

Norman Whitfield wrote "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" for Aretha. She performed it but as far as I know she never recorded it.

Saw her perform in Toronto many years ago. What a powerhouse!

The first woman to be inducted into the Rock & Roll HOF.

Oddly enough, she died on the same day as Elvis. RIP

There will never be another voice and artistry like hers... a true goddess.

According to the director, this is one of only two performances in the movie which isn't lip-synced. Turns out that after multiple attempts at lip-syncing it was clear that Aretha just couldn't do it - it wasn't the way she sang. So they recorded her live simply to get on with production.

There was only one other singer in the same class, Aretha outlived the King of Soul by 35 years.

Norman Whitfield wrote I heard it Through the Grapevine for Aretha, other's took it up. Whitfield died a decade ago: 9.16.2008

He didn't neglect his own band. Lead Singer, far right.

I concur. Such a powerful voice and stage presence. There has never been, nor will there ever be, anyone like her.
