I haven't searched it yet, but thought I'd ask her before logging off for the night. But my brother wants to transfer files from his laptop to his new desktop build.
Can he do it through ethernet cable/router? Or would it have to be strictly USB to USB?

If there is some type of network setup that allows him access to his laptop from his new build, he can download or copy that way.

He can also buy an external hard drive, save the contents from his laptop to the external, and then transfer that way.

Another option if he feels comfortable is to buy a dock, remove the HDD/SSD from his laptop, load it to the dock, and transfer.

Those are some of your options.

Good luck!

The network (ethernet cable/router) might be the best depending on the network's bandwidth and number & size of files being transferred.
It would save time as you would be transferring once as opposed to copying from his laptop to USB drive then to desktop ( though this method will give him a backup of the files).

If there are a large number of files:
  • Use Copy and not Cut
  • break the transfer into smaller file sets instead of all at once
This will minimize file losses if there is a power or network or hardware failure.

You have a few options:

1) Network. Put both PCs on the same local network. Make sure network discovery is on, both PCs are in the same workgroup and the source PC has file sharing on for the directories to be transfered. Wired (LAN) is prefered over wireless, but wireless will still work fine. Give the destination PC about 2-5 minutes to discover the source PC and then copy away.

2) Transfer via USB key. Easy and moderately fast depending on the total size of files you need to move. Don't forget to "safely remove device" each time you pull the key out.

3) Transfer via external drive. Same as above but can handle larger files and could be used for back-ups at the same time.

4) Windows 7 and 8 have a built-in program called Easy Transfer. Straight forward, just follow the instructions.

I use a ClickFree backup unit to back up all files, including photos, videos etc that is on the laptop and
then hook it up with the PC and use the restore function to copy all the files onto the PC. Very easy.
