A recent finding from Ryerson student and Nectarine journalist, Adam Wilson, has revealed that crimes on Ryerson University’s campus have gone up by 86.6% since the opening of Toronto’s first safe injection site directly beside the campus on August 21st, 2017.

Wilson’s article and finding affirm what many students have felt but have been hesitant to mention publicly regarding this part of campus: it is becoming more dangerous, and you probably want to circumvent this area on your way to class in the early morning, and at night or avoid being on campus at night altogether.

As a student at Ryerson, though I have not been directly affected by the increase in criminal activity, I have enough friends to personally know many who have experienced attempted muggings (sometimes by entire groups), theft, and being propositioned for the sale of drugs. And though Ryerson Security is constantly patrolling the area, the problem is quickly getting out of hand.

Actually what was counted was not crimes but emails about incident reports received by Ryerson Security, and only for three months May-June-July comparing 2017 with the same months in 2018. FWIW, only Ryerson Summer School is operating in those months.

I don't know how accurate this is, but I've been approached by pushers a couple of times this summer- once on Jarvis and once off Wellington. Not that unusual, except that it was middle of the day, both times. I didn't buy(got my own guy, beside would never score on the street), but the selection seemed wide and the prices were very reasonable.

Just what do you mean by 'Ryerson Summer school'? It is a university, and operates all year long. Perhaps undergraduate programs/courses might be greatly reduced, but there is no such thing as 'Ryerson Summer School'. Graduate courses might take place during the summer, and certainly research, graduate and faculty, occurs all year long. The only reference that I could find about summer school is with respect to extensions to admission requirements and extension courses at the Chang School that is probably all over the campus.

Spoken like someone who never went to University :)
The Ryerson summer school is when all those who maybe get accepted require extensions to build up marks or take missing courses
As a result many students hanging around campus are at best the ones who would have lowest marks at worst those who had a chance to qualify for a University course then had offer rescinded

Obviously, you never went to university. You did not read my response carefully. I actually was an adjunct professor at that institution a number of years ago.

The point I was making is that there is a lot more than just ‘summer school’ going on in the summer at Ryerson. Graduate research and other activities take place 12 months a year and the activities that you pointed out are a small part of what goes on in the summer. Did you bother to click on my link about the Chang School? I didn’t think so.

Anyone who has been there, or at any other university would/should know. Did YOU ever attend a university?

I call BS, Ryerson is not a real University, and if you enroll in a fake university then you have already been mugged.

You still don't get it
There are more wannabe undergrad students hanging around during summer
Which is exactly what other poster told you first

Even Ryerson own website (which I linked) refers to Ryerson summer school

(And nobody believes you were a professor there lol
Just stop trying to big yourself up on the net)

Safe injection sites: A place where junkies can get disease-free needles so they can continue their lifestyle of robbing people to get money to shoot up. Personally, I prefer natural selection.

Ryerson got its university charter by decree of the Province of Ontario in 1991. It IS a full fledged university and more highly regarded than U of T for many programs, both undergrad and grad.

Any other incorrect info for this thread you would like to share lol
I do laugh at the idea it ever had higher regard than UoT
I stand corrected on the year.

I went to U of T and was teaching at Ryerson during the CEAB reviews. U of T engineering failed and was not accredited for electrical and another engineering discipline. Ryerson got full accreditation.

Again, what are your credentials that you are such a genius with respect to things academic?

What I meant was "Summer Classes" which is the actual wording in the RU Calendar I looked up. As one pedant to another, I apologize for substituting the careless usage of my student days elsewhere for the precise term here. You indicated the relevance to the topic when you said undergrad courses were greatly reduced. I doubt the criminals care much what we call the session, but it's quite likely they prefer the sparser population for their doings. With so few details of the 'study' to go by, it's entirely possible that is the only reason for the 'rise' in alert emails.

Oldjones, thank you for clarification. I always appreciate your analyses and comments, even if we don’t always agree on political philosophy. You are a gentleman and a scholar.

Thanks for my giggle of the day.

While Ryerson is a fine institution, U of T is World Class.
