Shapo's mental toughness has yet to catch up to his athletic ability, so far none of the opponents he's lost to have beaten him convincingly.

Shapo says that Felix Auger - Aliasiemme is a better player than he is. I had to see it to believe it. You know you're good when Joker shows up to practice with you. FAA just beat a top 20 player in Lucas Pouille and he did it with relative ease, if he gets through the next round he'll play Sasha Zverev in the 3rd round. There is no wasted energy in his game, I've never seen anyone defend a point better at such a young age. Canada is becoming a tennis powerhouse.

Prior to the Roger's Cup commencing, Daniel Nestor announced that this would be his final competitive year. The CTA held a roast for Nestor at RH Hall. I caught snippets of it, it was tame compared to current roasts. Joker took part and delivered some zingers but the highlight had to be the Stefan Edberg live feed. He said that after he got beat by the Canadian, Nestor apologized to him.

Canadian pride!

I wish that TV coverage of matches have court level cameras as in this practice video, i don't like the high camera perspective, as you don't really see how much the ball moves verically due to the amount top spin.

The schedule worked against Shapo, he had to play three matches in consecutive days. His opponent Robin Haase had the advantage of getting proper rest when Delpo withdrew with a wrist injury. It showed in the second set, Shapo made more unforced errors than he normally does. He's growing up though, he didn't allow the abrasive Fabio Fognini to get his goat in the second round.

Both finals should be great Rafa is back to being Nadaaaaaal again, but he faces a hot youngster in Tsitsipas. The women's final should be just as good, but it may be a washout. Sloan Stephens faces Simona Halep - Halep hasn't gotten proper rest either.

I didn't see it as fatigue. I saw it as un as yet undisciplined teenager. For some reason, at 5-5 in the first set he started going for winners way too early, before points had been properly set up. He just started going for everything.

He will learn (hopefully).

Right, Shapo's mental toughness has to catch up with his physical ability. He tends to get frustrated quickly when he's down a set. FAA looked good he could have easily won the 3rd set tiebreaker against Medvedev, inexperience was his downfall. He looks mentally tougher than Shapo and his overall game is solid. Is he eligible to enter the US Open as a qualifier?

Interesting historical note, The Fed was 19 when he defeated Pistol Pete Sampras at Wimbledon.

Canadian tennis was supposed to have arrived 5 years ago with raonic and bouchard and that fizzled quickly, as I expect these players to as well. We'll always have some players on the circuit but never consistently top players imo.

Shapo reminds me of agassi early On, flash without much substance although agassi eventually figured it out.

Do you have anything concrete/technical/insightful with which you make that statement or just based on the history of Canadian tennis and a pessimistic outlook.

The history of Canadian tennis is for the most part disappointing, with the odd bright spot thrown in, we rode nesters win over the Swede for years, forget his name now. There is no reason to think that will change, I see shapos career following bouchards.

Stefan Edberg was the No.1 player in the world when Nestor beat him. John Isner calls him Vorhees, The Fed sent a message, "Dany is retiring, I'll try to be nice".

Simona Halep sacrificed her magnificent knockers, it's paid off. She wins the Canadian Open, solidifying her status as No.1 going into Flushing Meadows...or until Garbine Muguruza clears her head again - she withdrew from Montreal.

It's been a decade since Tim and Sid ruled morning radio, they always got me to work in a better mood. They used to spoof superstar athletes, the best ones were on A-Roid and Raffa, "I am so great you can call me Rafael Nadaaaaaaaaaaaal". He's playing like that now.

So basically, because we have never had a champ we never will.

Nothing sustained in golf or tennis, even basketball. We seem to have flashes in these sports and then it fizzled. We seem to like to pound our chests and say we've arrived in certain sports but it is short lived. Two years in a row we had the number one bball pick and everyone was talking about the VC affect, most players are roster fillers, I don't even think the guy for the twolves panned out like they thought.

I don't think we'll ever have major champions again in tennis or golf and never see the likes of Nash or wier again in our lifetime. They had a focus you don't see in the new generation imo, it's easy to become rich now and the drive diminishes.

So nothing about the future based on facts.

Just your intuition that we will NEVER have champs in golf and tennis because the up and coming players will never have the drive and passion that is required.

I think I understand now.

You're exactly right, now you get it. How do you base a future on facts, it hasn't happened yet so how can there be facts, I'm curious?

I said there might be the odd winner but nothing sustained.

As for tennis: which juniors are in the system, what results they have been getting, who are their coaches, maybe they're going to a prestigious Florida academy like Nick Bolitieri that turns out (or used to turn out) world class players, if the Canadian development system is getting good results, if the system is getting good funding, etc.

A lot better than a gut feeling that whatever happened in the past is going to go on 'til eternity.

Awesome match between Shapo and Francis Tiafoe in Cincinnati.

Tiafoe will be one of Shapo's main rivals on his ascent. The American beat Milos in Toronto by playing to his weakness, his lateral movement. This time Shapo didn't let frustration become him, he got broken allowing Tiafoe to serve for the match. Shapo broke him twice without going to deuce and won the three set match. This is what Shapo is capable of when he cranks up his game. Johnny Mac was impressed.

Eventually Shapo will live by Rocky's catchphrase: THIS IS HOW WINNIN IS DONE!

As for my Calabrese gumba: Nick Bolitieri, he must have known what was coming when Genie Bouchard dropped him a second time. She has to get her priorities straight. She too busy being a social media maven to concentrate on her game. She getting beat easily because of it. Without tennis her endorsements will dry up - just like Anna Kornikova before her. She should keep this in mind.

If Genie doesn't smarten up, her career will be a Paulie Walnuts catchphrase: We'll cover em with leaves, let the squirrels eat em.

Absolutely. Maybe they are just facts that you never considered.
Only you considered them because you made them up, 'Lord I was born a ramblin man'
