Not a concern for me as i do not drink beer very often, however you can buy a case of beer for $27 in Quebec which is pretty close to a buck a beer. Obviously this includes some sort of provincial tax so the cost to the beer manufacturer must be significantly lower than a buck a bottle.

I read that in Ontario almost half the cost of a case of beer is tax related. Crazy!

Funny thing is I remember in 1979 a case of beer was $7.20. Yes, the misspent summer of fun working at a resort up in the Muskokas...

I thought conservatives backed responsible economics.
Guess not, guess its all about cheap beer and voter pandering.

I travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. frequently and I've noticed the price of Grey Goose. At the LCBO a 750 of GG is $50 Cdn. At Costco's at M.B. a 1.75L is $48.00 U.S. With exchange that is approx. in Cdn. to $117 to $74.

Draw your own conclusions, of which there is only one that is viable.

My fear too. A buck a beer sounds good but how will it taste? I voted for Ford but if the election was held today would probably vote Green, think Ford is power tripping and is settling old scores.

In its heyday, buck a beer was a successful marketing campaign and seized a significant share of the market, said Scott Simmons, president of Ontario Craft Brewers, who was an executive at The Beer Store at the time.

Several brewers adopted it, including Lakeport, which "really took it to town," said Simmons, who spent a year at the company.

But the costs of making beer have gone up, as have the provincial and federal taxes, making it less feasible for brewers to sell their product at the $1 minimum price now, he said.

"I don't see many, if any, heading to that price simply from a profitability point of view," he said.

"I don't think it can be done in 2018 but some brewers may think it can be done and I'd be interested to see what's actually in the product that they're selling at that price," he said. "It can't be very good, let me put it that way."

Few brewers sell at the current minimum price unless they're having a sale, Simmons said, noting that an additional $6 drop for a case of 24 would likely wipe out any profits.

Still, the move will appeal to value-conscious consumers, though it probably won't affect the craft beer market, which attracts a demographic that is willing to pay more, he said.

Wonder if he will force Massage Parlours and Strip Clubs to drop their rates as well. After all Ford is all about getting drunk, going to the strip clubs, smoking a joint and then having a great back rub. Forget about petty things like minimum wages protection and infrastructure spending. He should get Trudeau to repeal Bill C-36 as well!!

BTW I do not think Ford is the sharpest tool in the shed, but it also shows how simple the job can be.
The simple rule is: stop fucking over the hard working people!
Of all the ways to increase the Ontario deficit, cheap beer has to be one of the stupidest.
So sure, cheer for cuts to health care, social services, education, democratic representation and yes, cheap beer.

Ford is on track to make the gas plant scandal look like a good use of money.

Really, what a pathetically transparent stunt which will only appeal to lowest strata of mouth breathers. Was that not a Ford fan who drove into the bar at Donlands and O'Connor yesterday? YEEHAW!!

Although his staff and Brewers Retail were as blindsided as the rest of the Province, and no one — likely not DoFo either — knows what his announcement will really mean at the cash register, the best bet is only that the currently regulated minimum price of $1.25 will be dropped to $1.00. When and if any brewer actually sells beer for a buck will be up to them and their bottom line.

In customer terms: There's no line-up yet.

Yeah I personally would prefer to pay a bit more for good beer and reduce the poverty in our province. I typically only drink socially so I pay $10 a beer and that will probably not change.

Debbie Downer strikes again.
Go watch The Shawshank Redemption after tarring the roof and enjoy a cold beer under the hot sun for a buck.

Ford is kicking ass and taking names. After over a decade of government bloat and pandering, it is refreshing.

If you want to remember the old times, I recommend you go order a few thousand dollars worth of pizza and drop it off at your local union hall.
You could also take a billion dollars out of the bank every month, put it in a big pile, and burn it. The possibilities are endless!
Funny, I thought Doug Ford and the rest of the PCs were for less government involvement in private business.
Changing the gov't regulated ( heh...) minimum price from $1.25 to $1.00 per bottle will not have any lasting effect on the pricing unless DoFo reduces the relevant provincial taxes too.
As other people mentioned, beers sold in that price range have the personality of used dishwater.

Not to mention no brewer, no store and no Premier has said anyone will actually sell any beer at that low price. Just that they're now permitted to. Where the PC government will make up the shortfall in taxes, DoFo isn't sayin'.

In addition, nobody has come forward on Terb stating that they will drink this catpiss.

...and how has that helped to reduce poverty so far?

But when the Liberals increased the price of beer, i.e. "government involvement in private business" it was ok right?
