So had my gut examined and the GI spoke to me after that, so far everything is clean inside and He will be seeing me in 10 years. Does this mean, even when you're clean, there is still a chance of something might pop up later? I never wander away from my diet and my lifestyle has been the same routine for decades. I thought It was a one and done. The procedure itself was a breeze but the prep and anticipation stressed me out.

LOL The taste of that stuff they make you drink is disgusting. Things can happen even in healthy people. But I believe that colon cancer is slow growing, that's why they wait all that time to see you. But in the future keep your eyes open for blood in your stools. They also have a mini test where you put a little piece of your feces on a special pad and you mail it in for analysis.

Yeah, that was why I got it done. I had rectal bleeding 3 months ago. GI said it was fissures right close to the "exit". No polyps and 10 years he will do a procedure, AGAIN! Not looking forward to it. He said I did everything right with the prep and I told him, yeah, because I wanted it one and done as I heard some stories about GIs repeat the procedure because of bad prep.

The prep for a colonoscopy kills most bacteria in your gut.

TAKE some good probiotics. Re-populate your gut with good bugs. Do not leave it to chance.
I suggest taking two or more different types of probiotics.

Your body's bacteria are very important to your health. According to some new research, they may be as important as your genetics. We are a few years away from some material developments in treatment by altering your bacteria. For now all we have is probiotics.

According to my gp everybody should have a colonoscopy every 5 years starting at age 50. Earlier if there is family history of colon cancer.

If they find polyps they will remove them during the procedure, and send them out for biopsy. If they find polyps they will recommend follow-up colonoscopies every two years.

I believe a few years ago, OHIP moved colonoscopies from a 5 year repeat to a ten year repeat. I do not know about Quebec.

IF you have exceptional risk, there will be an exemption to allow regular follow-ups.

Death is the only "one and done" in life.

Be grateful you don't have a family history of colon cancer, or it'll be ten years, not five. Or three if you had multiple close relatives. But they get to be routine.

And there's always hope for gentler laxatives and ever smaller scopes. There's a swallow-able wi-fi mini-sub already, but because it's a must-dispose-of-afterwards item, it's only for deep pockets today. But in ten years?

Glad everything came out okay for you.

Thanks. I know I can handle the fasting, the prep...it was a challenge...I was dozed off during the procedure and the doctor came out with the results fairly quick. One thing I learn is that, with the right prep & fasting, everything will be quick & smooth. I've heard of others that need to redo due to poor prep and not totally flushed out.

An actual colonoscopy is still the "Gold standard" in detecting colon cancer.

Imho OHIP changed to 10 years from 5 solely to save money.

Even though I'm a senior you would be surprised how many essential prescription drugs OHIP doesn't cover. Thankfully I can afford them, but I'm sure many seniors can't.

Another reason could be that they know the procedure isn't
as essential as it is made out to be. I suspect more than a few
physicians never had a colonoscopy exam.

GTA & Thereabouts...
Despite an early age, I had family history and potential issues which sent me in for one right away. Fasting was easy, the drink was disgusting... I have to admit that I felt great afterwards. No bloating and completely empty. My pants felt loose.

No issues showed up, but I'm on a 10 year return visit as well.

I'm due to have another colonoscopy sometime next month. Due to personal history, I need to get it done every year. Right now it is not to see if I have colon cancer but to see if it is getting any better. Doctor says I will prpbably be going for chemo for the rest of my life but there is a chance.

It's not unusual for a colonoscopy to damage the colon. There are more perforations than they care to admit. For polyp removal, it makes sense, but more and more virtual colonoscopy via CT will become the standard for screening. Not invasive and while an equivalent prep is required the patient won't have to be sedated.

Yes. I was ready for the worst based on what i've been reading onwards to my procedure. Perforation, Camera will go all the way up, and I believe there are occasions where they pump air or water if the prep isn't done well etc etc etc...I prepared myself for a good prep, fasting etc etc. Everything went like a breeze. I was out 1:10 I was awake around 1:35 and everything was done.

Hi Northern, sorry to hear about that. I have a friend who was diagnosed with one, they removed his tumor and now has colostomy bag.

No polyps = no cancer. And if you're waiting for signs well then it's too late. I'm a fit guy, have regular & health bowel movements & recently had 3 polyps removed in a routine scan. If you can book the procedure in the morning so you only have to go 1 day without eating. The cleanse is worse than the procedure. You drink this fruit flavored jug which is 4L (drink 2L day before, 2L in morning). Get the scope done in the morning because you have to fast the day before and by day 2 you're starving. I wasn't put under and I didn't find it uncomfortable. You are able to watch it on the screen too. I used Peglyte for the cleanse and once it starts working get ready to spend a lot of time in the bathroom. I'm a clean eater and healthy but it just stunk like nothing I'd encountered before. You're clean when you're shitting out yellow liquid. You will feel much thinner and you'll lose a few pounds.

It's a good idea to get a scope from age 45 on.

Wow, 4L jug of that? I got prescribed Pico-Salax. 150ml per sachet, 2 pack sachet in a box...was advised 1 day of clear liquids only but I did it even the day before just for good measure. Nothing but clear gatorade and water. Was pissing yellow out my ass by night time. The camera was thinner than a pinkie so it wouldn't be an issue for anyone who had their prostate examined before. One thing I noticed though is that, as precaution they warn you that you can't drive afterwards due to sedation. I never felt dizzy or nautious right after. Me and my SO went to the mall after. no bloating. was ok for the rest of the day other than some mild cramping which subsided by the time we were in the car home.

A little advice:

Pre-mix the gross solution they make you drink, and put it in the fridge for at least 12 hours before you have to drink it, so it is as cold as possible. Then when you do drink it try to "chug" it so it misses the taste buds on your tongue and just goes down your throat.

I also recommend getting some "baby" wet wipes for wiping your butt hole cuz it tends to get irritated after so much pooping and wiping.
