I watched The Purge in theaters last night and in one scene government drones and shoot and kill people.

Terrorists and clever and cunning. How long before they start using drones for the same purpose here in Toronto and in other cities?

You mean like the incendiary kite and balloon attacks that Hamas has been sending from their territory to start fires in Israel in recent months? Yeah. Probably will happen before too long.

Gee I wonder how tolerant Canadians and Americans will be regarding almost indefensible drone attacks?

Trudeau will welcome the drones, claiming that they're just misunderstood

Maybe you need to start preparing.
You could start by reading this article.

Simpler to rent a truck and drive it through a crowd. Great for surveillance though.

You need to drive the truck which means a high probability of getting caught or killed (not that they seem to mind). With drones, they have to find the terrorist which may not be an easy task.

Fly them over highways, into restaurants... they can go everywhere!

You watched a movie and now you can not separate reality from fiction.
I don't think that comment is fair. Drones have come a long way in the last few years. They can lift much more weight, are quieter, have longer range and have better cameras. If operated at night using an IR camera and GPS, they are almost undetectable. Th bad guy could be several km away and virtually untraceable.

I know the civil aviation industry are worried about Drones and have placed all kinds on restrictions on them (not that terrorists care).

Smallcock's question is valid. Whether it be a bomb, shrapnel weapon or a gun, dealing with this threat needs to be considered today. Think about it, if a drone carrying a bomb was being flown up Young street right now, very little LE could do about it. Think of the panic! Maybe a lucky hit from a shotgun (do Toronto cops still carry shotguns?), but that same shot may hit people in the buildings. <-- Even then, the cops only have a few seconds to identify the threat, get the gun and shoot .... all while the drone is moving quickly up the street.

Terrorists already use drones, the type with 2 legs, 2 arms, a head full of stupidity. No need to upgrade the flying variety.

Many terrorists prefer not to die. This latest technology could make them more effective, so of course they will use it. Heck, considering the price of some rental trucks, a drone could be cheaper.

You don't even have to have a real bomb or gun every time, just something that looks effective. Maybe drop some white powder that makes people think chemical attack. Fly it over a parade, a concert, the Exhibition and people will panic and/or stay away.

Regardless we need LE to start considering countermeasures NOW. Could be radio jammers, net guns, different shot for the shotguns, giant fly swatters .... workever works and can be engaged rapidly.

Good thread.

If you are a terrorist and you do not want to die, then you get a human drone to do the job. Now I am sure you are thinking to yourself, what if the terrorist is nice bloak and does not want his beloved human drone to die but everyone else should die, in that case I suppose a flying drone is one of the options; though still a bad option.

Yeah, true. Like hijacking and flying planes into buildings. That stuff only happens in the movies.
