To my mind it principally relies on three things. Those being interviewed seem almost entirely to have been urged to take the interview by their speaking bureaus hence they went into it with the supposition that the questions were going to be standard questions. Cohen in character is often hard to understand. Most importantly most people in such interviews are hesitant to be disagreeable (did you just ask me!) or to walk out.
