Chinese Refiner Stops U.S. Oil Imports, Turns To Iranian Crude

By Irina Slav - Jul 09, 2018, 12:00 PM CDT Chinese oil refinery

An independent Chinese refiner has suspended crude oil purchases from the United States and has now turned to Iran as one of its sources of crude, media reports, citing an official from the refiner, Dongming Petrochemical Group.

What’s more, the source said that Beijing is planning to slap tariffs on U.S. crude oil imports and replace them with West African and Middle Eastern crude, including crude from Iran. China has already said that it will not comply with U.S. sanctions against Iran and it seems to be the only country for now in a position to do this.

U.S. crude oil exports to China reached 400,000 bpd at the beginning of this month, but now Beijing is planning to impose a 25-percent tariff on these as part of its retaliation for Trump’s latest round of tariffs on US$34 billion worth of Chinese goods. The retaliation began with tariffs on 545 U.S. goods worth another US$34 billion, but, Reuters reports, the oil tariffs will be announced at a later date.

Energy analysts seem to believe that these oil tariffs are more or less a certainty, and now expect a reshuffle of crude oil imports to Asia. With China turning to Iran for its crude, U.S. oil could start flowing in greater amounts to another leading importer in the region, South Korea.

“If China retaliates with tariffs on U.S. crude, that could improve South Korea’s terms of buying U.S. crude...because the U.S. would need a market to sell to,” on analyst, from the Korea Energy Economic Institute.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s embassy in Iran this weekend rejected media reports that the country had suspended oil purchases from Iran under pressure from the United States. The country is the third-biggest buyer of Iranian crude in Asia, buying Iranian crude at an average daily rate of almost 300,000 barrels since March this year.

Since US announced first round of tariffs vs. China in March the S&P 500 is up 5.3% while the Shanghai Composite is down 15.7%. That's a bad dream for China.

I think the PRC will respond to that by saying, keep dreaming.

Then ignore the Americans.

As Trump has stated many times, the US lost the trade war years ago long before his presidency...

Now he needs to instil FAIRNESS to China - US trade. That means no IP theft, industrial espionage, forced technology transfer, copyright infringement, software piracy etc. You need to negotiate from a position of strength with China before it’s too late and the US is doing really well atm. Plus, they have a leader with balls compared to limp wristed Obama

Also, China must not be labelled a “developing” nation anymore at the WTO. That was China’s decision, every nation describes itself. Maybe if China doesn’t do this the US should change its status too to developing nation to enjoy the perks that come with it...

Now gonna sit back and listen to all the liberals with Trump derangement syndrome come to China’s defence. And don’t give me this shit about how China is the victim and Trump (US) is the aggressor. If they are so innocent and believe in fair play why did Trudeau block the sale of AECOM to the Chi-coms?

Cheers

Do you really think that repeating these idiotic platitudes that the PGOTUS spouts al the time is productive. It is absurd to state that the US has lost the trade war and this ignores the facts and by that I mean objective facts and not Trump or alternative facts. The US has created the most powerful trading nation the world has ever know. It wins virtually all of the WTO disputes to which it s a party. It has more non-tariff barriers than most countries.

There is no doubt that there are inequities in the trade between various countries and that China has abused the rules regarding IP etc. Are the eay in which trade can be made more fair for all including but not limited to the US? For sure. But the hyperbole spouted by the PGOTUS and repeated by you and the Trumpanistas is quite absurd.

American farmers are losing billions from Trump's trade war — but they're still supporting him

At least for now, support for Trump persists among farmers who have 'concern and some worry' about where trade may be heading
