Once again, sports fans, the annual July 4th ritual took place for the 104th time at Coney Island, New York. We are talking, of course, of the annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest.

Once again, Joey Chestnut, all 230 pounds of him, won handily, although with some controversy over the final count, consuming a record (the old record was his) 74 hot dogs in ten minutes. It was his 11th title in 12 years. For the ladies, Miko Sudo won with 37 hot dogs. Sonya Thomas' record of 45 for the distaff record, remained intact.

When interviewed by ESPN and other reporters afterward, Joey admitted that the day after the contest, he would feel terrible, "much like a marathon runner after the big race."

Congrats to Joey and Miko, true athletes, to say the least. Still, I consider Chestnut's record of eating 141 hard-boiled eggs, (approximately twelve pounds) in ten minutes in 2013 to be the ultimate in gastronomical consumption.

Miko stunned the world last year by eating 16.5 pints of vanilla ice cream in 6 minutes at the Indiana State Fair.

Kudos to these tried and true athletes, who are dedicating their lives to keep Nathan's hot dogs at the forefront of the hot dog business.
