It would hand the election to the Democrats, exactly how Bill Clinton won.

It does raise an interesting question though. Does Trump's existence create a viable opening for a 3rd party candidate? Nobody since Ross Perot (and Teddy Roosevelt before him) was able to pose a serious threat.

I've often wondered if a party that supported the fiscal conservatism of Republicans (without the religious element) combined with a common sense social stance (none of the conservatives I know give a damn if gay people get married, or if abortion is legal) could prevail. In essence, an anti-extremism party.

Maybe not. But somebody smart out there has to be thinking that this is the cycle to make something unique happen. Joe Lieberman or somebody like him?

Sounds like a great idea. What could go wrong? The nutty Ross gave America the Clintons, after all. It's also a great way to have a perpetual Democratic majority.

It's a non starter. It would split the right wing vote. It would starve for lack of the massive, mega-funding every US political party needs. Murdoch (who owns Fake Fax News) is a close, personal Trump ally and FFN would attack the new party relentlessly and tell the Faithful that it was composed of gay, pro abortion Jesus-hating Californian drug-users. The GOP base is split between Southern / Midwestern Jesus wackjobs and immigrant-hating Trump cultists. And none of the established GOP star and wannabe-star politicians would take the chance and jump to it.

It won't be a right wing third candidate. The Democrats are already a right wing party.

It will be an actual progressive run if anything. And I'm betting Bernie is going to take a shot.

He should, by all means. I'm sure he'll do very well on both coasts. He'll go down every place else. America is fundamentally a conservative country.

I think it’s more likely a left wing independent movement runs a POTUS canidate (Sanders) to show disgust over the WallStreet Democrats. The Dems have just changed the rules so Bernie can’t seek their nomination, setting this up nicely.

This would lock Trump in for another 4 years.

So after we all get over singing along to a recording of Louis Armstrong's Wonderful World. It is amazingly hard to run a third party nationwide political campaign. As a fundamental part of federalism elections are run by the states so you would have to manage to get onto the ballot in all 50 states, look at the last Presidential election none of the third parties was on the ballot in all fifty states.

Unless polling showed that for some reason this new party was running away with the election people would be unwilling to vote for it for fear of splitting the vote. e.g. exactly what happened in the election of 1912

Agreed. It's Bernie that makes it more likely. He could carry NY against another liberal. I don't much care for his politics, but damn it's fun to watch the Dems tie themselves up in knots trying to disagree and agree with him at the same time.

If I could hold my nose for another four years I might send him a check just to watch the show.

Bernie will turn it down, just as he refused to run against HRC when she was nominated.

If you want to see someone agree / disagree / duck questions / run and hide / pretend not to be doing any of the foregoing, you missed the Marco Rubio interview on CNN last night. I've never seen a guy try and say so many nothings in so short a space of time.

they need a Corker, Flake, Sanford type to run as an Independent to give the Sane people left in the Republican Party someone to vote for and take away votes from Trump. Maybe Joe Scarborough - that would be fun to watch him and Trumpty Dumpty bash it out. It would get ugly but real fun to watch.

The truth. 16 democratic senators voted to dismantle dodd frank. Most Democrats voted to raise the the military budget by 80 billion.

California dems had all levels of power. And killed a universal health care bill after electing a former Pharmaceutical lobbyist to run the party.

Obama care was not left wing. It was an insurance industry welfare program.

And I've seen pics of dem campaign ads with the candidate holding an AR-15.

They are not a left wing party. A few are, more pay lip service. But enough and the leadership are not.

Bernie has the grassroots machine in place in all fifty states. He didnt turn over his donor list to the DNC. He is the driving force behind all the primary challenges.

And he has the poll numbers to get into the debates.

After that put universal healthcare as the what would become the election issue. And it would.

You have a very angry and divided electorate. And alot looking for change.

Surely the Trump win must be lesson enough.....

Since the hack showed how they screwed him i think Bernie is not feeling any loyalty to the DNC.

I think all those Reagan Democrats in the mid west and rust belt will go for Bernie.

I think the DNC will fuck up the primary again.

The Reagan Democrats are centrist by the name's very definition. There's no way they'll vote for a socialist.
