TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - The Honduran toddler pictured sobbing in a pink jacket before U.S. President Donald Trump on an upcoming cover of Time magazine was not separated from her mother at the U.S. border, according to a man who says he is the girl’s father.

The powerful original photograph, taken at the scene of a border detention by Getty Images photographer John Moore, became one of the iconic images in the flurry of media coverage about the separation of families by the Trump administration.

Dozens of newspapers and magazines around the globe published the picture, swelling the tide of outrage that pushed Trump to back down Wednesday and say families would no longer be separated.

“My daughter has become a symbol of the ... separation of children at the U.S. border. She may have even touched President Trump’s heart,” Denis Valera told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Valera said the little girl and her mother, Sandra Sanchez, have been detained together in the Texas border town of McAllen, where Sanchez has applied for asylum, and they were not separated after being detained near the border.

Honduran deputy foreign minister Nelly Jerez confirmed Valera’s version of events.

Varela said he was awestruck and pained when he first saw the photo of his crying daughter on TV. “Seeing what was happening to her in that moment breaks anyone’s heart,” he said.

The photo was used on a Facebook fundraiser that drew more than $17 million dollars in donations from close to half a million people for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), a Texas-based nonprofit that provides legal defense services to immigrants and refugees.

The Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy had led to the separation of 2,342 children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border between May 5 and June 9.

Video footage of separated children sitting in cages, an audiotape of wailing children and Moore’s photo had sparked worldwide anger over Trump’s immigration policies.

Sanchez and her daughter had left Puerto Cortes, a major Honduran port north of the capital city, Tegucigalpa, without telling Valera or the couple’s three other children, he said.

He said he imagined that Sanchez left with the little girl for the United States, where she has family, in search of better economic opportunities.

“If they are deported, that is OK as long as they do not leave the child without her mother,” Valera said. “I am waiting to see what happens with them.”

Trump can now rescind the executive order.

It has you can see has given ammunition to those who approve of the policy.

If you are going to present a picture as a representation of what was a bad policy when it's not an example of it then the backlash is inevitable.

Why?

Surely a bad policy is a bad policy is a bad policy. The only people to whom the miscaptioned (?) photo has given "ammunition" are those who have believed all along that it was a good policy.

That makes no sense: As a representation of a policy — something no one can take a picture of — an impassive Trump confronting a weeping child against an empty background, with no comforts in sight, let alone a parent, is pretty true to what's been described, and he's defended.

A backlash from impassioned TrumpTwits was already in full cry. It continues even after their Dear Leader backed down, Their current nonsensical efforts to justify themselves by critiquing and deriding the cover for clearly being what it clearly is — a photoshopped editorial cartoon — because they'd prefer a snapshot of a real instant in time, just make them sound like they misplaced their last borrowed brain.

This is no road to a sure win for the man or his supporters in 2020. But the rigging that got him in last time might still work. With the current tactics it's their only hope, 'cause they're making no friends and fewer admirers.

Today, the conman dragged out some families who had lost family members to violence by immigrants. Disgusting is a kind word.

When is he going to drag out families who lost a family member to police violence?

There is no doubt some immigrants are criminals and everyone should lament the crimes committed by them. But the PGOTUS and his followers including those on this board would have you believe that because some of them are criminals then all of them must be criminals. This is simply an attempt to provide cover for what is clearly a racist president and a racist policy. SAD.

And it continues because they tracked down her father in Hondouras and it appears she left with the Child without the fathers permission. This on CNN.

Not 100% sure at the moment but we shall see.

Wow! This is shocking news!

As a matter of fact, I have carefully examined this pic and I’m pretty sure this isn’t even a real pic of Donald Trump staring down at a little Hispanic girl in front of an empty red background. I strongly suspect this was somehow photo-shopped!!!!!!!!

You know that Hillary would have hugged that child, especially if distracted from the fact that she collapsed into her limo again.
What's a "Defend Trump" thread without Hillary?!

The Americans have permanent ownership of the trophy.

In any event Trump would win it for his hetz against immigrants. It is unconscionable that he parades people on TV who has lost a family member to violence by an immigrant, when USA is one of the most violent societies in the world, including shooting of innocent people by police.

Nah. That's your boy Trump for his latest ruse to suck all the venom in White Middle America right to the surface by showing photos of White kids who were killed by undocumented aliens (all pretty much Brown looking) at his rallies.

You got to keep The Hate flowing, Bottom. With Goebbels, it was photos of mean-looking Jews. With Trump, it's Hispanic mothers and children.

Maybe next, we'll have Stephen Miller, Seb Gorka and Bannon getting together to re-write "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" - except this time, the fiend who kills and mutilates the sweet little White kid will be Honduran and not Jewish.
