Her third similar offence in 21 years!

The widow of former Toronto mayor Rob Ford has been spared jail for her third impaired driving offence in two decades.

Renata Ford rubbed a parked car as she pulled into an LCBO parking lot at Humbertown plaza, on The Kingsway, on Dec. 28, 2016, nine months after her husband’s death. She left her vehicle and tried to buy a bottle of wine, but was refused service.

She registered blood alcohol readings of double the legal limit two hours after police smelled alcohol on her breath at 5:30 p.m., court heard.

Ford, 47, pleaded guilty to impaired driving, and her lawyer, Dennis Morris, urged Justice Ted Kelly on Wednesday to not send the single mom to jail, despite this being her third similar offence in 21 years.

Morris said she is living solely on her husband’s City Hall pension but is now sober and healthy.

Kelly gave Ford a suspended sentence, three years’ probation, a two-year driving prohibition, and 100 hours of community service, and ordered her to have an interlock device on every car in her name. She was also fined $1,100 and given a year to pay.

The prosecution wanted a 45-day jail term and Ford prohibited from driving for one to three years.

Morris said the sentence “was an excellent result and a just and fit outcome.”

She's been charged with impaired 3 times in 21 years. I wonder how many times she's driven drunk over that time period. Some people never learn!

She should have gone to jail. Sick of this special treatment bullshit. Same goes for Marco Muzzo. It appears that he's not in prison. Just a sham sentence. Friends of mine have seen him all over King City.

Sounds like an okay sentence. Mostly I like it for the two-year prohibition from driving. Not sure why they gave her a whole year to pay the $1,100 fine though.

Also, being a single mother isn't a defense. If that's an excuse to let her off easy, you can just as easily say how scary and serious it is that a single mother is driving drunk and risking orphaning those kids. Not to mention risking the lives of countless other kids on the road.

So if you don't pay child support they throw you in jail but if you are driving around drunk dangerously it is okay - yeah great.

I'm just wondering why Doug and Doug's mother, can't help out Renata and the kids more financially??

I'm also wondering if Renata will succeed in her lawsuit against Doug and Randy Ford??

I think there maybe a valid reason why Rob Ford put his money into a trust! Its for their own protection!!

Not in a chance in hell!! I think Rob Ford recognize their is some sort of substance abuse going on in the family and knowing Rob Ford he trust his best friend which is his brother to look after his family when Rob dies. Plus if you look at Doug Ford history he gave away all his 5 year councillor salaries to charity! Just like Donald Trump.

PS. You can only claim 50% tax credit on charities!

I liked your last sig pic, the girl with the massive hooters, but the current sig pic is horrible!

Getting back to the thread in question, I think the sentence is too lenient considering she is a repeat offender.

Third Conviction or third time she has been charged?

If third conviction extremely unusual where I practice ------ but that isn't Ontario.

That said: three years’ probation, a two-year suspension, an interlock device on her cars (although why that is needed if she is prohibited from driving for two years - I surely don't know), 100 hours of community service, and a $1,100 fine is not insignificant!

The device would be installed for a period stated by the judge after suspension ends and licenced again to any cars she owns.. And by the way..you pay for that also over and above the fines.. I think its close to two thousand bucks, you have to pay to have it checked every month or so too

I call bullshit on this.
Muzzo was eligible for unaccompanied Temporary Absences since last October, at the discretion of the Warden where he's incarcerated, plus a case management team. You are safe to bet he's been granted it in the intervening eight months.

Late this year, he will qualify for unaccompanied Day Parole.

So you can call bullshit all you want.

Let's see now: the lady has continuously disrespected the well being (rights) of those around her by refusing to stop drinking and driving; exhibits a reckless disregard for the property and lives of others; and exhibits an unbounded arrogance by driving while so intoxicated the liquor store employee refused to sell her more booze. I wonder if she was going to pop open the wine in the car and slosh it down while she was driving. While you can characterize the punishment as not insignificant, I think this woman will continue her behavior until some serious damage or death occurs.

Her lawyer said things have been very difficult financially. He described Ford as a widow with "limited means," whose only income is her late husband's municipal pension.

How about getting a job!
