I haven't seen this discussed yet and I think it's worth bringing up.
Today I went to see my regular and at the end of the session she happened to smash her finger hard on the head board. It wasn't broken as I found out later but it easily could have been. I felt pretty useless, I've done it before too and I know it hurts like a bitch but not much you can do. I offered what help I could or what she would accept and (like I would have done too) she turned most of it down to take care of her self. I got myself ready to leave, she knew she needed to go get it looked at so she was getting ready to go too. Again a few more offers to do something to help her were turned down so I made my way out.
I didn't play that very well at all. Due to my profession I've had a lot of first aid training and I know people who are hurt pretty bad will play it down and act like nothing is wrong, for what ever reason that's human nature. Also I've been injured a lot so I know exactly what that's like, and I know it's the seemingly unassuming injury can cause a lot of problems. After having many dozens of stitches over the years and an accident so bad I needed reconstructive surgery, the only thing I ever passed out over was a stupid little cut on my finger that didn't even hurt. It can happen to anyone. What I did wrong was I left her to drive herself to the doctors. Sure it's just a finger and obviously not life threatening but it's a lot of pain in a sensitive spot that she could have passed out from en route or even just been distracted by it enough to cause an accident. 100% it would have been inconvenient and maybe pretty awkward too for us both but I should have driven her there or at least stuck with her until she was there. I know I should have known better.
So to the point; shit happens. Have you thought about how to deal with it when it does? I'm sure it's way north of 99% of the time nothing happens, but what if it does? I am trained and somewhat experienced and I dropped the ball on this. Just something to think about...
