"President Trump on Monday announced that he's directing the Pentagon to create a "space force" as the Defense Department's sixth military service branch.

"In defending America, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space, we must have American dominance in space," Trump said during a meeting with members of the National Space Council.

"I'm hereby directing the Department of Defense and Pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a space force as the sixth branch of the armed forces. That's a big statement. We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the Space Force, separate but equal."

The declaration follows statements made in March in which he endorsed the idea of creating an independent military branch for space
."

Didn't his own administration and Defense department oppose this just last year?

Apparently he said he intends to nominate Buck Rogers to head the space force.

Of course, they did. Manned space flights are rarely made these days, let alone "space colonies".

Trump just wants to promote himself "General-Marshall of Outer Space" and wear a sparkly uniform and hold parade.

He'll be the greatest, bestest General-Marshal ever. I can just picture him in his form fitting military spacesuit with lots of gold braid and metals all over his chest. Awesome sight!

Do spacesuits come in size 50 waist and size 2 gloves?

No doubt that space represents the best location for ICBMs defense systems as well as for systems to defend from the newest hypersonic missiles that Russia and China (DF-21D) are developing. I could probably live with space planes (Aurora?) But I REALLY hope they aren't considering deploying permanent offensive weapons systems in space.

I'm all-for development, just not deployment.

Another insanely expensive weapons race with the potential of catastrophic failures in locations humans can't get to quickly to fix and even more space junk cluttering up our orbits.

Smart actually, signal intelligence and communication is dependent on it and now it’s with the airforce.

Are you are saying the US Air Force Space Command is incapable of dealing with such issues?

How would creating another agency with all it's expensive redundancies solve this problem? The Defense Department and Joint Chiefs opposed this idea last year.

What about the Outer Space Treaty that the US signed? Will Trump be pulling out of that one too? Will the Russians and Chinese quickly put nukes and weapon drones into space ....... making space a friendlier and safer place to hang out?

Trump was talking about putting men and weapons into orbit, he wasn't really focused on satellites CiC. Or is this really just about the Trump Van Allen?

Why doesn’t he just build a space wall, and get the Mexicans to pay? Who needs satellites? That’s how fake news gets out.

Actually, this already exists but it's a segment of the US Air Force. So this is not about completely creating something new but rather splitting this off from the air force as it's own branch.

But headline-readers on this board don't actually research the facts...they just assume they know everything and make misinformed comments.

Surely this is something that Ivanka can have designed and manufactured in China at a profit to the Trump family!

No. We understand perfectly, Boober. We just think it's stupid.

It should stay part of the USAF.

If the Coast Guard doesn’t finally get its day, I’ll never support Russian efforts during an American election again.

Space Command was already mentioned in post #7. Trump in his announcement never mentioned Space Command and specifically said it would be new and standalone.

Before you get all preachy and look like a fool, you should read the thread to make sure you aren't assuming you know everything and make misinformed comments
