Wow. A pretty much wire to wire win by Justified at the Belmont Stakes yesterday, making him a Triple Crown winner. (being the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes)

The last triple crown winner was American Pharoah in 2015, and before that no horse had won the triple crown since 1978.

No other horse really pushed him, so Justified's time of 2:28:18 on a "fast" track was about 2 seconds slower than American Pharoah, and over 4 seconds slower than Secretariat's astounding win in 1973. It should be noted that Secretariat won that race by 31 lengths according to final calculations, and ran that amazing time with no competition whatsoever!

With the time being over 4 seconds slower than Secretariat's win, I wonder about a comparison of the track conditions of the two different races. There was a clip on the television broadcast yesterday about Belmont Park bringing in all that sand to spread on the track, thus it's nickname "the big sandy". Did they do the same back in 1973? If not, the track could have been harder and thus faster for Secretariat. Not to belittle Secretariat's time - I still watch his Belmont win on Youtube regularly. Still gives me a big thrill - but not quite an orgasm lol.

Northern Dancer, canadian triple crown winner, has a street named after him at Ashbridge Bay

"Steppenwolf" would make a great name for a great horse

The horse's name is not Justified.

Justify.

Rule of thumb for thoroughbred horse racing is 5 lengths per second. Might be a bit more for Secretariat lol.

If so, Secretariat would have beaten American Pharoah by at least 10 lengths, and Justified by at least 20.

Of course it is possible, as bigdickdean says, that Secretariat was running on a faster track...

I tried to get my horse Ask For Ass, into the Queen's Plate - no luck.

I can see why some would be confused.

Northern Dancer, canadian triple crown winner, .....
Northern Dancer did not win the Triple Crown, placed 3rd in the Belmont.

Northern Dancer was a small horse, pound for pound he was one of the fastest, as he held the Kentucky Derby record of 2:00 flat (now the 3rd fastest derby time ever) before Secretariat broke it.

Ottawa base.
he did amazing, thought I think Secretariat was a bigger win as a whole. Short stumpy horse and a 15.6 hand tall thorough breed have a bit of of a difference

Secretariat definitely was a bigger win although not a huge success at stud. I saw Secretariat run his last race which was at Woodbine. Although he did not win the Belmont after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness one of the most successful studs was the Canadian horse Northern Dancer who was small and Secretariat is the only horse to run the Kentucky Derby faster than Northern Dancer.

Before Secretariat came along and captured the hearts of racing fans, Seabiscuit's match race with War Admiral was the race of the century:

horse racing is the only sport where you can accurately compare eras and find that horses today do not run faster than horses of yesterday despite any advances in science or training. I saw Northern Dancer win the Queens Plate and I still go to the track today. My father once said that he first went to the races in 1935 and lost $10 and he spent the rest of his life trying to win it back.

When Horses Attack. Pretty tame video I grew up with horses. For the most part they are well behaved but they have a pecking order in the barn. Mess with that and they will let you know. I was bitten, crushed in a stall and kicked at.

Collecting horse semen and then artificial insemination. I experienced this once at a massage parlour.
