Sunnybrook stables burnt down early this morning. Something like 18 horses were killed. 13 were rescued and are being housed at the Exhibition stables for now. I usually ride through the park on my bike on my way to the lake but this morning the access was closed off (I usually enter at Sunnybrook Hospital, and go down into the valley entering the park just below the stables). The entire park was closed. Initially they thought some horses may have escaped but all are accounted for. Very sad about the horses and what was a landmark for the park.

I heard it on the news, how terrible. What a horrible death.

My sister used to take riding lessons there and the family would go to watch her ride at that stables.

I saw on the news that they were looking for witnesses who may have seen anyone there in the early hours of the morning. The implication would be arson.

If so, that's really fucked up.

Big insurance payoff, if the owner was short of $$$$.

It brings to mind accusations that a famour racehorse (forget which) was killed by his owner to overcome a liquidity crisis.

Were there smoke detectors and a sprinkler system installed in the barn? If not, why not.
Because there are no bylaws and every time this happens the same question is asked but nobody does anything about it.

Most regular alarms for your home make a loud sound that irritates the horses and can cause them to act in a manner that could cause harm to themselves. A silent alarm works well and there are system packages available for stables available on the market or you could put something together yourself that incorporates current wireless technology. It's the monitoring costs over time that you may have to deal with as well.

Water sprinkler systems are more expensive with upfront costs but not with maintenance long term.

Problem is that they are too cheap and lazy to implement them. Only when it is too late and see the loss that they realize it could have potentially been avoided.

This happens almost everyday in different parts of the world. Sad.

I think the park budget has been tight for years. Eg - right across from the stables is a large building. It has washrooms, used to have a snackbar, and then another section which is always closed. The snackbar has been closed for about 10 years. This area if the park is actually well used in Spring and summer so the snackbar might actually make money or at least break even from an operating standpoint, but it has sat in disrepair for about a decade. The horse barns and riding area always looked pretty good from the outside, but im sure there was a lot if hay and other flammables inside.

Sounds like an incompetent management issue. I remember that building with a snackbar. It was quite nice.

Sounds like a PR campaign and maybe some events and attractions may have made the complex profitable.

The barn probably had worthless horses. If the stable had top dollar Belmont Stakes kind of horses, i'm sure the building would be better.
