Texas school shooting victim had spurned suspect's advances, girl's mother says

Santa Fe teenager accused in 10 deaths rejected during 4 months of 'aggressive' advances

Thomson Reuters · Posted: May 20, 2018 12:59 PM ET |

A teenage boy charged with killing eight students and two teachers during a shooting at a Texas high school had been spurned by one of his victims after making aggressive advances, her mother told the Los Angeles Times.

Sadie Rodriguez, the mother of Shana Fisher, 16, told the newspaper her daughter rejected four months of "aggressive" advances from accused shooter Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, at the Santa Fe High School.

Fisher finally stood up to him and embarrassed him in class, the newspaper quoted her mother as writing in a private message to the Times.

"A week later he opens fire on everyone he didn't like," she said. "Shana being the first one."

Rodriguez could not independently be reached for comment.

If true, it would be the second school shooting in recent months driven by such rejection.

In March, a 17-year-old Maryland high school student used his father's gun to shoot and kill a female student with whom he had been in a recently ended relationship.

As the investigation enters its third day on Sunday, no official motive has been announced for the massacre, the fourth-deadliest mass shooting at a U.S. public school in modern history.

Quiet loner, played on football team

Classmates at Santa Fe High School, with some 1,460 students, described the accused shooter as a quiet loner, who played on the school's football team. He wore a black trench coat to school in the Texas heat on Friday and opened fire with a pistol and shotgun.

Multiple news accounts depicted him as taunting his victims as he fired, focusing mostly on the arts class room where Fisher was.

He has provided authorities little information about the shootings, his attorney Nicholas Poehl said, adding: "Honestly because of his emotional state, I don't have a lot on that."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, told reporters that Pagourtzis obtained firearms from his father, who had likely acquired them legally.

Abbott also said Pagourtzis wanted to commit suicide, citing the suspect's journals, but did not have the courage to do so.

Pagourtzis's family said in a statement they were "saddened and dismayed" by the shooting and "as shocked as anyone else" by the events. They said they are cooperating with authorities.

All schools in Santa Fe will be closed Monday and Tuesday, officials said.

Pagourtzis, who police said has confessed to the shooting, was being held without bond Sunday at a jail in Galveston.

I think people need lessons on how to deal with rejection. Seems we are going back in time instead of forward.

How many men have been in the paper lately because they can't handle the rejection of a woman? And there are how many women in the world? Like seriously guys, no one woman is worth it and this is coming from a woman. If one says no, move on to another.

Although to be honest, most women probably would have rejected this guy. He has the balls to run into the school with daddy's big boy guns, taunt the people he didn't like but then wets his pants like a pussy when it comes to finishing the plan by offing himself. Sorry not sorry that people, men and women both, don't want to be with fucked up lowlifes and yes most normal people can tell from the get-go who the fucked up ones are

Decades ago..... Act like a tard to a fellow student, he will get beat up at recess for being an ass.

Modern day..... Act like a tard to a fellow student, he will be arrested because he already shot up the school

It's part of male DNA. I can't explain it, but most guys will have the inherent emotions of winning, kicking ass, and being tough guy.

That's why when it comes to crime (especially violent crime), it's almost always a guy.

Most guys control it. It's not like a switch you have to think about it. It's just normal to not go ape shit. But a small number of people (which are almost all guys), go haywire when confronted with an obstacle. If this was decades ago, it would be anger, fists being thrown and smashing something against a wall. But since guns are so easy to get (notice how all these mass killings lately involve higher end guns like AR-15s, instead of boring pistols), there's no point trying "win by punches". Too risky as you might be the one getting your ass kicked in.

Instead, might as well hammer home a victory by "win by blowing their brains out".

Sadly I think this is a LONG ways away. Having lived in the south for a while I had this conversation many times... as in I was approached about it. They do get very defensive about gun control but I noticed after having the argument many many times is the facts of argument don't matter. The root of it is that they are against being told what they can and can't have by their gov't that they are so passionate about because anything gov't run equals socialist/communism (their argument not mine). AFAIK they are the only G20 country to not have gun control, universal health care, or even the metric system. It doesn't matter if it makes sense or will improve their quality of life, they just don't want to be told.

I should add not all Americans are like that but it is by far the popular opinion based on what I saw.

The US is always the most capitalistic. Good for some. Lousy for others. The type of country where if you are smart, law abiding and have a great job, it's a great place to live. But if you are the opposite, it'll be awful.

Never mind G20 countries and universal healthcare. Cuba even has universal healthcare. You can be the most jobless broke person living in an alley, and the government will help you out.

Who of us has not had a unfortunate dating experience in High School or University? Yet who among us, got into a family gun safe and went and murdered people at said school or university?

Just about everyone has been pissed off in high school at some point.

The difference is that an American student some reason grabs guns and goes shooting up schools. How often have you heard pissed off students in other countries doing the same?

The funny and odd thing about it is that US schools are more heavily armed with guards or cops patrolling, who will show up in 2 minutes and shoot back, yet these students still go guns a blazing not giving a shit.

You'd think this would be a deterrent because who wants to get into a gun fight with cops? But it still happens.

So it goes to show the fucked up mentality.

The difference is that an American white male student (VAST majority of times) some reason grabs guns and goes shooting up schools.
