Volcanoes are Mother Nature's great equalizer against humanity. With all his underground testing Kim Jong Un could get his ass kicked, Mt. Paektu is pissed.
The first serious injury happened yesterday when a man was struck by molten lava that had blown into the air. Apparently hit him below the knee and basically pulverized his shin and foot. There's a new warning too about toxic gases and fine glass shards - created when the lava hits the ocean. Usually the saying is that a Hawaiian volcano creates emergencies which you can walk away from. But this seems to be a little more serious. Still only affecting parts of the South East section of the Island though.
Just my luck. I'm there in August. Hopefully things are somewhat back to normal by then. Sorry for the folks who lost their homes.
Hey, I'm going in August too with my kids. Flying in and out of Oahu though. If you stay on the West side of the Big Island you should be OK - fly into Kona vs Hilo, although there have been some warnings that some activity might be possible on that side. Island Hoppers are relatively cheap - you can get them for less than $200 return. Also - speaking with friends, there have been a lot of cancellations - I cancelled my Big Island reservation and will book again in about a month or two depending upon the situation.
