I didn't. I said ILLEGAL immigration and Trump happens to be on the right side of the issue.
You did, and it is still not a top two issue except to a racist prez. Healthcare, the environment, trade wars, standard of living, good education for all children and more are all bigger issues.
If he had clearly said in the first place, what he later claimed he meant, there would have been no misinterpretation. The press apologized to the Chief, when he had his people explain his real meaning to the world.
The OP's source quoted the context: It was not in context of any discussion of MS-13, the best one could argue is that the previous speaker had mentioned the possibility of MS-13 in a context of illegal immigration in general. But Trump followed with multiple mentions only of 'people' in general, and in no specific way did he connect to that single reference to the specific group.
If he put as much energy into correctly expressing himself as he puts into blaming and shaming those who are forced to interpret and report his off-the-cuff maunderings unaided, we'd all get better press, and less fake news, like 'What The President Really Meant'.
Learning to wait a day or two until his people explain what he said to him and get an 'official' version in English approved, will take the world some time yet.

Trump's genius, if it can be called that, is that he instinctively knows which issues are important and have traction among the electorate. And he knows how to exploit them.
