Tell me about it! I created a "wish list" of PC components almost two years ago now that priced in at $1500 for motherboard, CPU, GPU, RAM, and cooler. Checked it a few months ago expecting the same list to be down around $1000. Instead, it was $1600. For 2-year-old parts! The RAM cost had doubled by itself!

I'm now running on a PC that has 5-year-old components, but not running into any issues. It was a beast in 2013, so maybe that's why. I'm hoping it'll keep up until after this craze dies down. If it does....
Still running a first generation i7 Dell desktop purchased on 2009 Black Friday for about a Grand with no issues. It actually runs better now than when new, after installing a couple SSDs, the only upgrade made. The OEM 1TB HDD did die after 3½ years. Replaced it with a 2TB HDD, for Windoze & storage. This 2TB drive still runs well and 'SMART Data & Self Tests' reports it OK in spite of having 8 bad sectors for the last few years.

Now the 7th & 8th generation i7s are out that substantially out perform my first generation i7, at about the same cost or less than back in 2009! Been looking at them but then hear the 9th generation i7 will be released later this year! Decisions, decisions decisions...... IMHO i7 is the way to go.

Me too! I have a i7 940 overclocked to 3.5GHz with a pair of SLIed Asus 770 cards. Was my main desktop and gaming machine for years, I now use it as a SAN, media server and backup server and installed 4 x 8TB RAIDed drives.

Here is some info on the new 9th gen CPUs: https://wccftech.com/intel-core-i7-9700k-9th-gen-8-cores-16-threads-rumor/
It's a "toc". More cores, higher clock and Turbo speeds. Lots of buses and great connectivity. Decent pricing.

Intel has released the i9 processors, but they are very expensive and overkill for my needs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_i9_microprocessors

I've gotten away from desktop machines and just use laptops for both business / personal use. Light weight (<4 pounds) is important to me, so it's hard to find a laptop that is durable, dockable, packs a decent processor and good gaming graphics capability at a reasonable price (<$2.5K) as well as the ability to drive 3 monitors. This year several new machines packing a i7-8700 and a 1070 video card at <5 pounds and $2500 are available, but a 1080 video card almost doubles the weight (due to heat issues). Everything is a compromise. ;-)

Agreed. Most people just trash their older machines so there isn't much availability of 2-4 year old used CPUs, memory or video cards (for those of us who are willing to run SLI). As a result pricing for 2-3 year old new parts hasn't changed much.

However, Intel's latest CPUs are very reasonably priced and 25-50% more powerful than anything older than 2 years ...... the problem is memory, video card and even motherboard pricing has gone up and the 8770 is in short supply.

It's funny, we don't think twice about spending $5 a day on a Starbucks coffee ($1500 a year) or $1000 on upgraded audio for a new car, but we bitch about spending an extra $500 on a PC that you use 8+ hours a day, every day.

This is currently a hot ass deal for a 500GB SSD @$130, https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B073W4N5KB/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&th=1

The higher end version the Mx500 is also on sale @ $160 on amazon. But I hear you can get an 960 Evo for about that price so I would get the 960 Evo instead.

I am waiting for a good deal to come along for high performance 500GB-1TB NVME drive.

RAM prices are retarded, flash memory prices have fallen, GPU prices have fallen, but that RAM is so brutal. RAM is like going black, once go you 16GB you can not go back to 8GB. It is the same deal with screen resolution, once you go 4k you can not go back to 1080p.
