HBO is setting up for life after The Thrones, a new comedy called Barry premiered on Sunday and it looks really good.

It's a show about finally: finally Bill Hader stops being second banana and becomes the main player, and finally Henry Winkler may get his second hit show.

Bill Hader on the Tonight Show. Good description of the show: Taxi Driver meets Waiting for Guffman.

Thanks!

But you can’t be serious about this actually being poised to pick up the GOT crowd. They seem to have put all their eggs in the Westworld basket for now, in-terms of production and marketing budget. Execs are even touting it as ‘the next GOT.’

Whether it will live up to the phenomenon, who knows.

Without any shame, I’m pretty happy with it so far.

They are working on at least 5 GoT prequels. There will be plenty of GoT to go around for quite a while.
I can’t imagine all 5 will be green lit, especially in the absence of GRM’s source material... how many seasons of Dunk and Egg do you want to see?

Regardless, I’m sure I’ll watch.

No real info yet according to what I read, but they’ll need something to plug the hole left in network programming before the estimated scheduled air date of 2020.

It was what 12 hours of air time?

They have several other properties and more in development. Westworld as an example.

I’ll watch pretty much anything on HBO, and this will be no different. Looks great. Hader’s hilarious. Personally, I’d call Arrested Development Henry Winkler’s second hit show, but still. Can’t wait to see this.

But I disagree that HBO in any way expects “Barry” to ‘set them up for a life after Thrones.’ I imagine nobody thinks The Deuce or Big Little Lies will fill the void after our watch has ended either.

They’ll replace a prestige series with a prestige series, and right now we’ve got Westworld. Thankfully.

I watch The Terror. About two of the most advance British naval ships exploring the Antartic in 1847. It has Ciarian Hinds who played Mance Rayder in GOT.

Ciarian Hinds also played Julius Caesar in Rome, he kept the first season interesting. After he was killed off, the show's weaknesses were exposed. HBO lost a good chunk of the money they made from The Sopranos on the 2nd and last season.

Never said that Barry would replace GoT's. I'ts a comedy, it's the chicken wings to GoTs porterhouse. I picked up Westworld after eight months, I watched the first two episodes and lost interest. I started watching it again after watching Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan directed and wrote the movie himself. I was left wondering what happened to Jonathan?

HBO has two shows that have developed a cult following: The Night of, and Banshee. It's possible that one or both will get another season. The Night of was James Gandolfini's project. He shot the pilot then was supposed to be the Marshall of the Taormina Arts Festival - he never made it.

Terror looks great so far. Will follow it for sure. Barry is great in itself...Bill Hader is underrated.

Is The Terror a historical or fantasy series?

You can't go wrong with Hinds and he reunites with his Rome cast mate Tobias Menzies (Brutus). I'll have to check it out.

They were both in Game of Thrones as well.

Menzies was brilliant as Jack Randall in Outlander (only Season 1 is worth watching).

And "The Terror" looks like it is based on the Franklin Expedition.

As good as some of these shows are my most anticipated remains Ray Donovan. And I was right, Bryan Cranston and Liev Schreiber play the central characters in Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs.

Maybe that's part of Liev Schreiber's charm, he looks so fierce you figure that he doesn't have a sense of humour.

The Terror is gaining rapturous praise from both critics and audience with scores of 91% and 89% respectively. I have it ready now I have to make time for it.

Feature films are being slaughtered by TV programming, it's getting almost pointless to go to the theater. I started watching The Good Fight due to Ravishing Rose Leslie, the quality of the show surprised me. CBS can easily compete with FX and HBO.

I watched it for Ms Leslie but Cush Jumbo is keeping me interested. Outstanding actor, where the hell did she come from?

Oh fuck, and The Blackfish from Thrones just made an appearance in Episode 2 of The Terror (well, technically Episode 3 since the premiere was 2 hours).

I haven't seen it yet, have to make time for two hours.

Talented Toronto actor Sarah Gadon has been cast for S3 of True Detective. So far Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorf are in. Gadon, a favorite of David Cronenberg and Denis Villeneuve, is an excellent addition.
