Hey all,

If you were a SC manager in Ottawa, what would you do to improve operations/increase activity/better the work environment?

Get rid of the rap music, clean the champagne rooms every two hours so that they actually smell clean and are clean, plant mystery patrons and fire dancers who steal by lying about the number of dances, have great bar food and keep hiring hot dancers. Ban dancers from wearing all that cheap cologne so the guys dont stink of the crap when they go home to their so's

It would be great if the manager could focus on "hiring hot dancers" as suggested above but I understand this is likely easier said than done.

Also (but again probably not too realistic) it would be so helpful if the club's website or social media account could be utilized to post dancer's shift schedules so that patrons could plan visits to see their faves with at least an outside chance of actually seeing them in the club. I expect many dancers work on a very indefinite schedule, often deciding in the morning of a given day if they will work on the afternoon or evening of that very day so the helpfulness or even viability of this sort of thing is likely to be quite limited in any realistic scenario. Hypothetically, though, it would be nice.....

make them into private clubs so that some rules inside are relaxed a little....along with posted schedules and a better presence on something like Twitter.

A website where a short bio on each lady is posted (similar to what CMJ/Brass Club has) available only for members to view (not saying the face should be posted that really is up to the ladies)

I would let the dancers dance to whatever they want recognizing that young people have a wide range of interests as do patrons.

I would ensure that CR rooms are as private as possible within by law limits. I would divert profits from alcohol sales into reducing DJ fees to make the club a little more attractive for the dancers. Ensuring the club is clean and updated should not take considerable funds. Something as simple as scraping used gum off from underneath surfaces will help improve an establishments image.

Increase the clubs profile through more social media and digital advertising. Its basically an untapped free form of advertising that Ottawa clubs are not taking advantage of at all. I have a few others but I'm keeping them to myself for when I open up my imaginary successful club.

Years ago, Pigale had Dancer schedules on their website. While they couldn't account fully for sick calls/no shows and such, it was mostly accurate. I really enjoyed having that resource, although my bank account didn't as it meant an increase in visits knowing there was a good chance of a favorite being there, or many new faces to check out!

Thanks for the posts. It appears from my observation that SC managers, are very unimaginative/chosen to follow a low-cost approach to doing business. While I am relatively new to this scene compared to some of the other posters on this site, it appears as though SCs have operated like this for awhile now. SC managers hold a distinct competitive advantage (they offer a service few other businesses in Ottawa legally can provide/that cannot be replicated), and by my estimation could be profiting far far more than they do.

It seems as though managers have come to the conclusion that they will operate like a bar. Dancers will make their money, and they will make theirs. However, ideally, the interests of the dancer and the SC align. As the relationship is right now, the dancer's motivation is actually not in the interest of the bar at all (the more money the customer spends on drinks, beers etc the less the dancer will make in the long run).

Recommendations:

Changes to Marketing:

Social media marketing
New products (shift from strictly SC to entertainment lounge, expand market to increase foot traffic).
Invest in upgrading and cleaning up venues.
Think big (i.e. TVs in the CR room).
Changes to product: i.e. "Bronze/Silver/Gold VIP membership to club" will get you into xx show, and xx meals, xx parking. Shows will need to be designed as currently dancer makes all money in CR (no incentive to do a show for dancer).
Customer rewards card: xx visits get you xx free entry. Build up enough rewards free drink, meal etc, CR time (dancer compensated by club).
SC culture shift (how SCs went from glamorous burlesque style, too more bar/gritty/less socially acceptable). Needs to be reversed (not saying back to burlesque, but rather the culture).

Changes to Dancer compensation structure:

Provide dancer with non-monetary rewards/benefit to improve retention and employee wellness (i.e. monthly gym pass, taxi chits).
Performance pay lump sum amount (i.e. they will get reward for successfully building clientele and getting them to the club). Monitoring system will need to be designed and implemented.
Removing all of their tip-outs (I still do not understand why they have to tip the DJ?).
Invest in proper security measures for the dancer's physical safety (ITC and when they leave).

Some of these ideas are impractical/outright bad. The idea here though is SCs, imo need to begin diversifying and thinking outside the box. They offer a unique service and it is still shocking to see how few patrons are there. They also need to begin aligning dancer interest with mechanisms that drive club profit - right now they are separate, and infact the club takes more from the dancer when they are the main attraction for the customer.

In keeping with WillingtoSpend's ideas:

Add a health club. Walk in pay your entrance fee and get a locker key. Change into a bathrobe etc Take a shower. Then use the sauna, hot tub, steam bath. Add an indoor swimming pool and an outdoor one for summer with a BBQ and a place to work on your tan, small cinema, a restaurant and several bars.

Oh damn I am on the wrong continent.

Sorry. let's just have clean restrooms, carpets and replace the chipped formica at the bar. Oh, and get rid of the slot machines that are more interesting to the dancers than the customers are.

Sounds wonderful, but you didn't mention anything about dancers?? Loool.

Sounds like you are suggesting Playboy mansion-type environment, except you were missing the part where thong-clad bunnies lounge around.

It's fun to think about what the clubs could actually be. On top of many of the suggestions here, I think I would concentrate on giving more freedom to the ladies who work there, instead of trying to control them.

I would allow women with all sort of body types to work. Tall, short, skinny, curvy, various races, looks, etc. Thinking all men like only one type of women (a.k.a. the barbie type) is ridiculous. Some girls are told they can't work in a certain club anymore until they loose weight, even though they have built a faithful clientele who obviously don't find them overweight.

Hire a female DJ. Let the strippers choose any style of songs they want to dance to. They'll feel more comfortable on stage.

Let them wear the clothes they want. If a girl wants to work in jeans shorts and a t-shirt, let her (some guys actually find it hot). If she wants to work fully naked, let her. Don't force them to wear high stilettos if they want to work in running shoes. (although it would be OK to expect them to put on shoes with a hard sole because of the occasional broken glass). Don't worry, most will still wear sexy clothes and stilettos because of the nature of the job, but they won't be forced to.

Make sure none of the staff is trying to abuse them. I've heard stories of staff members with the power to fire them, who would demand sexual favors from strippers. Instead of putting cameras in the CR, put them in the bouncer's and manager's offices.

Here's an idea. I've always felt uneasy about the DJ fee, but what if it was being used differently? What if they keep it, but they reward the serious and hard working strippers by making it possible to reduce it or remove it completely? As a stripper, if you book your shift at least 3 days in advance, you get a 20% DJ fee discount for that shift. If you book at least 7 days in advance, that discount goes up to 40%. Then, for every stage show (of 3 dances each) done during that shift, you can remove another 20%. If a girl books a week in advance and does 3 stages per shift, she won't have to pay anything at all. If it's a slow day, she can still go home even. This approach still leaves the possibility to just show up that day, but the incentive encourages advance booking. A side effect is that it would also permits having an updated schedule on a website, like what they have on most of the MP websites. This, in turn, would increase the number of regulars for the early booking girls, which will certainly be noticed by the others and encourage them to do the same. Also, if a girl is too busy doing CR dances, she can just pay the DJ to avoid doing her stage but will be making enough money in the CR anyways to compensate. If a girl isn't as popular in the CR, at least, she won't have to pay the DJ fee because she'll have plenty of time to dance on stage instead.

Also, a good club owner should regularly ask the strippers what they want/need. In fact I would be curious to hear what strippers have to say. Are there any ladies on here with current or past experience stripping that would like to chip in?

Carfan is referring to an FKK (Europe) type of club. Not sure about bunnies but there are many hot women from many parts of the world, offering many services! Wish we had those clubs here!

Make the CRs private. That was the case years ago in Rigaud, man was it fun ...

Exactly. A safe and social environment. Guys will spend an entire afternoon/evening there with friends. Some even have couples areas.
