Too bad people only realize now. Facebook's business plan has always been to sell information about its users to advertisers.

I could care less. (But it figures. Google is just as bad,

I made a profile many years ago (before it was even a public company) and closed it after maybe 2 months figuring, (correctly), "this is lame".

I know who my friends are. I don't have 500 friends. I don't want 500 friends.

I also don't want to publish things about myself.

TERB is enough of a time vampire.

Thanks for posting james t kirk, it seems any form of media does steal our valuable time when others what to participate & invest their time & energy.
Between texting & media is there enough time left over to do everything else in the run of a day?

two things you should never forget.

1. there are no free lunches (If you are not buying with cash or anything else, then you are selling- or in this case, you are being sold, ie: you are the product).
2. the internet never forgets.

Facebook's whole business model is about collecting data. Likewise for Google. Amazon will gladly take your money, but they take other things too- like your data.

Frankly it shocks me that so many people are outraged about this. Wiley the whistle blower laid it out pretty clearly. He said Facebook wanted to kill the story before the mainstream media published it. But once Facebook lost control, they're (Zukerberg) is now saying they're as surprised as anyone. Yeah right.

Big data allows companies to segment data down to the atomic level- and you are the atom.

How to see what Facebook has on you (at a minimum)?

1. Goto https://facebook.com/settings
2. Click "Download a copy of your Facebook data"
3. Wait for automatic email from Facebook
4. Download the ZIP file link in the email
5. Extract it and open 'html/index.htm'

Windows 10 is doing the same. X-box is doing the same. Sony PS4 is doing the same. Your store rewards loyalty programs are doing the same. Now your bank will soon sell your spending habits data too?

glamphotographer, it's amazing how much of this is going on! I'm sure a large portion of the population hasn't got any idea what is being done with their information.
It's up to every individual to think twice before they upload any personal data of themselves. Once you make the decision to share your info you have lost control of it.

I think we should all go off the grid, like this guy.

Of course this would mean not caring about how other people live their lives, not caring what they think of you. And meeting with them face to face (do people still do that?). I had an Uncle who said one of the good things about getting old is that you can speak your mind freely, offending the wrong people is something you don't have to worry about, be it a boss, in-laws, a spouse, etc...

Dont use your full name to sign up with FB. Always use a nickname or an abbreviation of your last name.
Never post your telephone number, address or workplace location.
Dont post anything that can be incriminating.
Assume every employee at FB is reading what you write on your wall (which they are)

I’m upset that this happened, but this shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone who is the least bit informed.

It’s been almost 13 years since I got a Facebook account. I’ve paid a grand total of $0.00 during that time.

It shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone who’s used Facebook since 2013 that the ads you get are tailored to you based on personal information and your tags and likes. It was 2012 and 2013 where it became clear that what Cambridge Analytica was doing in-terms of data-mining, was not only theoretically possible, but actually happening

I deleted my account, opened a fresh one, took on a psydeunom, never liked anything except original posts from friends, never tag or geo tag photos and have myself locked down from tagging, searching, proper browser settings, etc. I don’t spend much time on it, but it’s the best way to keep in touch with friends and family, especially if you travel a lot. I use Messenger almost as much as Skype or FaceTime.

I can’t say I’ve ever read the License Agreement, but I’ve always just assumed they make their money by selling the information I enter into their “completely” cost free service. My grandfather used to tell me “nothing’s free in life.” If you don’t want the world to know that you “Like” Canada’s Wonderland, or “tagged” your burger at Montana’s, don’t click.

I’d rather pay a service fee than have my info mined, but here we are.

Elon Musk has deleted all his FB accounts: https://nypost.com/2018/03/23/elon-musk-deletes-facebook-accounts-for-tesla-and-spacex/

I dont understand Zuckerberg, he's worth over $60 billion and thats still not enough and he feels he must earn more money by selling FB's private information. What a fucking idiot, I hope he gets sued to oblivion
Really?!

Mining digital data is the modern gold rush, but it is only the starrt, and Zuckerberg scored on this count. The end game is all about power; that is where the real prize is. Facebook and Google are well on the way. Look how they control almost all information, worldwide, and its use.

It strikes me that much of the "horror" value is that it involves politics and a particularly polarizing election. The technology, however, is basically the same as targeted advertising. You purchased shoes on-line, now facebook or google show you advertisements for shoes. If you don't like all of this get off of facebook, stop purchasing things or making comments in your real name on-line, and dump your smart phone.

Exactly, Facebook's business plan has always been to leverage the information it collects about it's users. All online services does the same, Google etc. How else do people think Facebook makes money? I am surprised Terb does not target members based upon their choice of Fish plant girls.

Personally, I could not care less. I am not so easily swayed by advertising and ignore all efforts to influence me.

Where I am a bit grossed out is that this information could lead to the Bannon-era micro-targeting of political messaging, which could impact voting patterns.

What this data mining has done is provide accurate data on all Facebook users, data that tends to not change (you’ll still be a white, heterosexual male, who grew up in the suburbs in the 1970s or 1980s, who is in favour of blah blah blah). According to the reports, what they “got” on me will still be relevant and for sale, even if I deleted my old account or delete my new account.

So, although like you, I don’t click on Ads, and rarely click on even a link on FB, I recognize that those around me could be duped into casting a ballot they wouldn’t ordinarily cast in the absence of unscrupulously designed campaign platforms. Trump’s election has negatively impacted my personal and professional life, if that happened in Canada or other countries I spend time in, I imagine the effects could be profound.

This tech is a populist candidate’s philosopher’s stone, and that should worry anyone who recognizes that the role of government isn’t to satiate the interests of your base in a democracy, but to govern on behalf of all citizens.
