(CNN) A 9-year-old boy retrieved a gun from his parents' bedroom and shot his 13-year-old sister to death, authorities said, after the two got into an argument over a video game controller.

The incident occurred over the weekend in rural Monroe County, Mississippi, as the children's mother was preparing lunch in the kitchen, the country sheriff said.

"He wanted the controller, and I guess he knew where to find the gun," Sheriff Cecil Cantrell told CNN.

The boy grabbed a handgun, which was kept in a nightstand next to the bed, and shot the sister in the back of the head, the sheriff said.

"This is the first time I've ever dealt with any child that was shot like that," Cantrell said. "And I hope I never deal with it again."

The girl was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, where she was pronounced dead Sunday.

The case is still under investigation and authorities have not filed charges.

"We are talking to the district attorney," Cantrell said.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this marks the youngest ever murderer in history, right? And I mean murderer who knew what he was doing and killed in cold blood.

Off to a good start in life.
Tragic.

If only the little sister had been trained and equipped to protect herself effectively

The only thing that can stop a bad child with a gun is a good child with a gun.

The parent is not a responsible gun owner! One gun should not be loaded and two gun must be locked in a safe place like a safe or cabinet with locks! It the parent fault keeping a loaded gun in the house ... Not locked!!

Speak English.

If she was armed this would not have happened.

Seems you need a little help understanding English again.

I dunno.

Telling me to lock up ALL my guns except for the one I’m using seems awfully close to an attack on my God given constitutional rights to arm bears or whatever.

What if I need to defend myself from multiple British attackers coming from different directions?

Nope. Much safer and more constitutional to have armed the little sister.

Very very sad.

Exposure to violent video games, no doubt. Confusion between fantasy and reality.
Obviously it was the video games. It's the worst thing to happen to children since rock and roll music and Greek plays.

Rock an Roll never promoted violence. At least, nobody understood the words. I don't think school age kids ever got into Greek plays.

1st person role playing video games are a recent development in the upbringing of young people. It desensitises them to violence and removes empathy towards others. It also makes them think that you can always press reset when things don't go your way. Good to train people for the army I guess, since it cultivates the notion that the good guys (their own side) is invincible.

But hey. Since you think that, if it weren't for guns, society would be utopian, then the notion that he would have otherwise hit her over the head with a frying pan could never happen. Ya... I get it.

Who keeps a loaded gun in a nightstand where there are kids around?
If you are paranoid and buy into the dirty Harry theory that all breakends are to be armed conflicts, you need the gun cocked and resting in your hand as you sleep.

While we are close now, I had knock down screaming fist fights with my siblings. Our family would have definitely been smaller is a gun was this easy to access.

Just because your family wasn't responsible enough for gun ownership, doesn't mean that others aren't.

I'm not sure what moronic leap of logic gives you the insight to determine how responsible my parents could have been with something that they never possessed. You can assume that they were responsible enough as parents not to have guns in the house with kids. I gave away my rifle when I had kids which was basically a no brainer decision. I was living in the country and seldom used it anyway so reducing my chances to zero of the kids obtaining my gun seemed the obvious choice.

Just for responsible parents who like playing the odds with their kids:

I guess it depends on priorities. BTW: The actual count of tots handling guns is estimated much higher since the police are normally involved with tots who didn't miss their target.
