Is he a magician?
Only as much as all the other pols and princes and pharoahs since ThutmoseII who have made the same empty promise, then broken it.

The most spectacular of line of hypocrisy recently in this country was a still-living Conservative PM who loudly promised his government would never run a deficit, then ran up record ones every year until he was defeated, all the while 'financing' them through 'efficiencies like in Dougie's drug-dealer's spiel.

Then at the lower tier there was his late brother who promised cleaning up the waste at City Hall would pay for everything. But he was a crackhead, and not responsible for the tax-hike his pet ScarBurrow has stuck us with, in spite of having to empty the Emergency Fund and use inflated Real Estate taxes just to run the City when they should be building it. As he bailed, the City Manager predicted the coming shortfall would be approaching 7Billion. When that comes due, it'll make a $5/month car tax or 15¢ for shopping bags seem a penny-ante 'respect for taxpayers', won't it?

The hilarious thing is, the dopey half of the PCs — the ones that fall for that fairytale every time — think they're the hard-nosed, clear-eyed realists.

But what about the elites and his promise to clean them?

Or draining the gravy boat or whatever?

You think he is not part of the elites?
All he did was cut the City's ordinary tax revenues and increase its ordinary expenditures. The shortfalls were made good by raiding various of our civic savings accounts and funds, not doing maintenance and not doing promised upgrades and improvements that came due. And by depending more every year on what the city gets from the Real Estate Sales Tax. That was Rob, and Tory's the same, just with a more CBC-polished speaking style.

Rob's strategy was like taking a voluntary pay cut so the boss'll keep you on in spite of incompetence, then living week by week off the kid's college fund, and the account where you were saving for a new roof. Because the neighbour's paying you so he can park his new car in your driveway until he gets rid of the old one, there's just enough to get by each week. But the furnace is starting to groan …

Elites? They're just the cream of the crop. Exactly the sort of folks you want in difficult positions of responsibility. But certainly not guys who claim 'they can finance it all by efficiencies'. You know they're lying, even if they don't.

Well that true, one luxury of being as dumb as a post, is you have no idea when you are telling huge lies. In fact, technically you cannot really even lie!!! You need to know the truth in order to lie, and if you are utterly clueless, then you area always speaking the gods honest truth!!!

Not quite. You thought you were speaking true in your post, but you were inaccurate. A person may well be too stupid or ignorant to know what is true, but that doesn't make it truth, god's honest or any other sort. It only makes them innocent of lying.

What we call a pol like Rob or Donny, who deliberately keeps themselves truth, logic and fact-free so they can say what they want without fear of correction is a challenge no writer of this century has succeeded at yet. For now, liar will have to serve.

The truth about the truth is there is no truth, just perception of what happened.

In fact, what Ford has been saying doesn't seem all that implausible. It depends on what he decides to do and over what time frame.

It's important to remember that Ontario has a huge public sector workforce that is aging and that has an incredibly generous pension plan. A number of positions could be reduced over a four-year mandate through attrition.

Well, all he has to do is cancel the proposed electrification of the Metrolinx railway corridors dreamed up by the same people who brought you Ontario's green energy program and you will save 5 billion dollars.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the diesel GO trains we currently have and no one other than a handful of enviro-weenies will care.

Only if you have a plan to get the work done without the workers you don't replace.

Harper was demonstrably brighter than either Ford, so was Mulroney, as well Chrétien and Martin from the other Party, and Wynne, McGuinty and Harris locally. They all promised and sorta-delivered those same 'efficiency-savings' Doug thinks he invented. Just look how pleased we all are with the state of the city, province and country, and how admirably and efficiently the three levels of government perform their routine functions today.

No one runs their home or business that way, but it's amazing how ready they are to buy that fairytale about government.

$6B in a total budget of $145B isn't much. Just over 4%. I don't think you need to be a magician to find those savings.

Add in 2% for inflation and you're looking at 6%, which isn't so easy.
The man who is responsible for the $3 billion subway stop doesn't have a good rep for being frugal, by the way.
And yes, Doug is tarred with Rob, through his support and enabling.

Close some gas plants,... replace with civil servants,...

Kathleen Wynne added 360,000 new government workers during her tenure.
Got to get the votes from some place,... who gives a shit about the cost.
