What do you guys think of this alternative viewpoint, which I’ve come across? note: I do not subscribe to it, just putting it out for argument’s sake.

It would be smart for Mexico to do all it can to preserve its relationship with the USA, even if this means paying the Wall tribute, a small amount over a number of years, say six billion dollars over six years. This is not too much to ask given all the USA does for Mexico such as foreign aid and open access to the American market (and a massive trade surplus for Mexico).
This would show respect to Trump and the nation he represents.
It's called leadership.
Whether it's politically expedient or not, it’s the smartest outcome for the Mexican people. You have to protect your most important relationship. Otherwise, Mexico risks becoming a failed state.
Here is a parallel: The USA is Australia's most important partner. Daylight is second.
In the recent past, Australia had to pretend Bush 43's Iraq war was actually a worthwhile adventure. Everyone knew it was bullshit, even while it was happening. But the country still sent soldiers, went to war and pretended to earnestly look for those WMD's. Because that's what made the 43rd POTUS happy.
Mexico should realize who butters its bread.
Just say "President Trump asked us to do better in areas A, B, and C. We pledged to make reforms in those areas."
If Mexico has previously been disrespectful to the US about illegal immigrants and eportation assistance, just assure Trump that they will start to be more respectful.
Trump understands that with all they are giving Mexico, respect should be a given. So, give it. And then let the relationship improve from there.
