Which do you have and why? Looking to install one and can't decide which is better. Tell me your experience please.

Can you control, monitor and program these two devices from the internet ?

I have a HoneyWell RTH9580 smart thermostat,

I can program to come on earlier the day I am leaving on vacation once, monitor and control the temp and humidity via the internet/Wi Fi, or the colour touch screen.

Obviously separate programs for heat and cool.

And will smart anticipate when to start to change the temp, depending on what the current conditions are in the home.

Not familiar with either one of these units.

The only disadvantage I can think of, it requires a "neutral" wire from the furnace, because it is powered by the furnace.

Mine was easy,... as "neutral" was also ground.

Rebate also applies as it is programmable.

So my understanding is they both have apps so you can program from away, which is the reason I want. I am not home much so it doesn’t make sense to hear/cool when I am out. I also hate coming home to an off temp house. The biggest difference I currently see is the Alexa or Google Home connect. I have both so not really a decider for me. The Ecobee has sensors you can place in different areas. I like this in theory but without specific vent control why does this matter?

I have an Ecobee I got through some provincial government program. It was free and included installation. The program has ended but I think it's going to re-open (link to follow).

I had a choice of three thermostats and chose Ecobee because it generally had the best reviews.

I also chose it because it's programmable. I tested it last week by turning the heat down when I left home and then turned it up again later through WIFI. No problems and the Ecobee is very easy to use. I didn't even have to look at the manual.

By the way, the guy who installed it advised against sensors. He said you don't really need them.

Thank you for the info! This is helpful. I like that Ecobee is Canadian too.

I also received the Ecobee free through the same program. Had no problems so far, but only had it about 4 weeks. Easy to change temperature directly or via app anywhere. Has built in local weather and forecast.

Slight downside, I had recently changed all my home wifi to 5ghz signal and turned on the 2.4ghz. The Ecobee does connect to 5ghz, and so had to turn back on the 2.4ghz just for that.

Just had my free smart thermostat installed 3 days ago via the Greenon program. I chose the Nest Thermostat E and find it quite easy to use. I am able to adjust temperature through my laptop or phone with ease. Apparently, it will learn my habits over time, but too early to tell. Also, I have Nest smoke detectors. I was a toss up between the Ecobee and Nest and found each had some pluses and minuses. Aethetically, the Nest is white and did not seem as obtrusive on my wall. So far, so good.

If you are invested in the Apple Home ecosystem, ecobee will work with HomeKit. Nest will not.

I have had the Ecobee for a couple of years now and love it. If you live in a home it makes sense to get the Ecobee because of the sensors. If you live in an apartment, the nest should work fine.

Thanks

Just an FYI that playing with the HVAC settings seldom save money in short duration (like the course of the time while you are at work).

You will spend your savings just returning the house to your normal desired temperature.

And there is the whole thermal mass thing to consider. A house takes time to heat up. The air might be warm, but you'll still feel cold because the contents and the structure of the house are slowly catching up.

Agreed.

It would be like some drivers who are on and off the throttle in their car, more energy is needed each time the throttle is reapplied to accelerate to the intended speed, than what would be consumed if maintaining a continuous speed.

I find that I am comfortable getting up at a lower temp. by one degree C, in the morning, than is required to be comfortable during the day, after the "sleep" setting.
Then on the week ends have it step up in three steps to a comfortable setting for the evening.
