Stuff in sports that irritate me

There are a few things I see in sports, especially nowadays that piss me off cause they are nonsensical.

1) Every now/again in a hockey game, you see a goal and then the screen posts a stat "When player X scores, the team record is A-B-C). How does this stat make sense or have any relevance. So Auston Matthews scored in a game. How does his scoring guarantee a win? It doesn't. The Leafs might have won a bunch of games without him scoring or lost a bunch of games where he scored. Most useless stat and ignorance of cause/effect/context

2) Similarly, PPG measures nothing. A guy scores 5 points in 1 game and 0 in 4 other games, so he averages 1 PPG. But he really doesn't. For 4 games he contributed nothing. The only reason to use PPG is to compare apples to apples - two people who have played a different number of games and have different point totals - who's scoring more? That's all PPG measures

3)As mentioned, shootouts in major tournament deciding games.

4) Judgement in certain sports. In Slopestyle, the commentator who presumably knows his stuff says the guys run was good but not the best - same competitor took the gold. Do I think the commentator was wrong or the judges? My bet is the judges are inconsistent.

5) Comparison of scenarios from many years ago. This year the Patriots played the Eagles. They also played many years ago and Tom Brady won. But other than Tom/Bill, they are two entirely different teams. Unless the previous victory was within the past few years, saying a team won/lost their previous matchup years ago is a useless comparison. Only should be mentioned as a historical fact.

Sports misuse facts all the time. It colours up conversations and commentary. I think it annoys most math based people.

My favourite....

Team A wins round one in the playoffs in four straight. They sit for 8 days Waiting for their next opponent. If they win game 1 of their next series they were well rested because of the layoff...if they lose they were rusty because of the layoff.

Media morons use it every time.

When I'm watching sports, I usually turn the sound off and have music playing. I gave up on media 'commentators' and their moronic dialogue decades ago. I know the sports I love well enough and could probably 'call' a better game. The music element also makes my lovely S.O. very happy and it lets me enjoy music I've yet to catch up on.

Trust me, you'll enjoy the game just as much, if not more.

Depends on the sport, depends on the commentators, depends on the situation. I think Pat and Buck call great games for the Jays. Hearing the playoff commentators when the Jays were in the post season sucked ass. I think many of the Olympic commentators being used have been great and many are former Olympians or high-level participants who know their shit. I was also playing poker during one of the Canadian hockey games and asked them to turn up the volume so I could hear it the background as I was tired of looking up once in a while to see the score had changed.

Another thing that I don't get is why almost every time they introduce Thomas Bach, IOC President, they mention his gold medal for fencing in 1966. Almost EVERY time. Be funny if they choose a multi-sport medalist for a future president. How long will that introduction take?

I really hate these new baseball stats like WAR, WHIP and OPS. Give it to me simple, man. I like my homers, RBIs, and ERA.

Don't know about WAR, but I think WHIP and OPS have some merit. Specifically I prefer OPS to average as it tells a better picture of a person's contributions. I think my softball league is using OPS to rate players because it makes better sense and let's you figure out the difference between two players with the same average but different power (nobody really walks too often).

The W-L for pitchers is BS. One can exit every game with his team in the lead only to have the bullpen blow it. There were a bunch of Jays pitchers this past season who had great outings but their records were terrible because of this.

I've also never understood # shots in hockey. Simply put, I understand it's considered a shot on goal where the goalie has to make some effort to save it. But I think there are shots that will almost never score (like from a big angle - almost no chance) but the number goes up. Don't know but does a shot that hits the post get counted? I'd argue the latter is more of a shot than the first. They should measure "good" shots versus "bad" shots i.e. shots where there was a real possibility of scoring versus ones where the goalie just had to sit/stand there.

The three point game in hockey. Dumbest thing ever.

I also get irritated by comments like your #2, which takes unrealistic extremes to try to make a point.

PPV killed boxing. Used to be a prime time event for championship bouts. These days it's a niche sport. Too bad, I really enjoy a great fight.

MMA killed boxing. More exciting, more fights, shorter lengths. The Paquaio-Mayweather bout was criminal given the amounts paid and the fight itself. I saw a similar fight in a movie entitled "Dodgeball".

Actually, rigged fights, greed and corruption killed boxing...and Don King led the way.

The fact that boxers fight for bigger purses tells you that boxing generates more revenue and that means that boxing is far from being outdistanced.

There's bigger purses because boxing is far more popular internationally and has been around (or at least in the spotlight) for longer than MMA. The one problem with MMA is I think they have oversaturated by having a PPV almost every month (or a free fight night).

Can't wait for Mayweather to step inside an octagon. But he won't because he would get killed in the 1st round. Respect to MacGregor for at least entering the ring.

Officials tossing hockey players from face offs.
Seems to be happening more this year and it slows down the flow!
(Too bad players couldn't toss the officials out!)

Watching sports highlights when a player has a breakaway and before he shoots the puck the commentator says the goalie stopped him.
Or an exciting golf putt on its way to the cup and before it gets there .."he will come up short"

Time to hit the mute button !!

Just saw a tennis match and the IBM Insights. What a load of crap. "Person A will win if they can win 79% of 1st serve points and 68% of 2nd serve points".

I also love the replays, especially where something needs investigation, and the shot shows nothing because the cameraman is too late. In hockey, for example, "Let's see if this puck was tipped" - they show the shot then pan over towards the goal and the puck is in the net so the replay showed nothing.

Not really. I've been a boxing fan since early seventies, I boxed personally in my younger days, did a bit of kickboxing when I came to Canada and a good friend of mine was an aikido freak. But, I never learned to appreciate the MMA- which is a compromise. Not good enough for boxing and above average wrestlers. Besides, two almost naked man, rolling on the floor is just not my thing.

PPG is a useful stat. Its not the only relevant stat.....but in my experience it correlates well over time with players performance.

Phil Kessel used to irritate me because he was very streaky. He'd do nothing for a bunch of games then score a few goals or get some assists in a single game. So his PPG means nothing if the majority of games it's 0 and for a couple of games it's high. There should be a stat that measures contribution. Let's say a player plays 10 games and has 10 points, his PPG is 1. But what would be useful is if I somehow indicated he scored in 7/10 games versus 2/10. I'm not saying it isn't nice when a person scores multiple times in a game however if you score 5 points in a game where the other team only scores 1 goal, that doesn't help as much versus a player who scores in many games.

That's the biggest problem with using averages. In certain context it works, in other cases it really doesn't, at least how its being used.

The weird thing is basketball uses PPG too and I actually don't think the problem is the same. But I think that's because a player who scores 20 PPG is going to be around that number within a deviation or two. Yes the person might have a great night or an off night, but for the most part they are putting up 15-25 points. In hockey, if I average 1 PPG, a deviation which can be expected often is 0.
