I really hate these new baseball stats like WAR, WHIP and OPS. Give it to me simple, man. I like my homers, RBIs, and ERA.
Except simple stats like hrs and rbis if focused on too heavily are a terrible way to measure a players impact. A big part of hitting is not only stiving in runs but helping the others on your team drive in runs. On base percentage , and the advanced stars run production stats make sense.

No problem with ERA. It’s a simple stat that measures your production fairly accurately. It has its limits, but it is the best of the old school stats’s

The problem though with ERA is you have one bad game and it shoots through the roof. A pitcher might have 20 good outings, pitching 6+ innings and giving away 3 runs or less. Then he starts a game, gives away 6 runs in an inning, gets pulled, and his ERA jumps up. Meanwhile he goes back to the 6+ great outings. Averages are great but they assume little deviation. When you have data and you see outliers you remove them from the calculation.

So the Leafs had a 4 game win streak, but lost yesterday in a shootout. They got a point and lost only because of a this method to determine a winner. I'm not complaining - I think shootouts are fine in regular season games to make sure there's a winner. But now the Leafs "winning streak" is over. They didn't win the game, but they really didn't lose it either. And a team that gets a point in every game will do fairly well assuming some of those are wins.

I could have created another thread for this point but decided to stick with this one.

Just read an article justifying the female hockey player's (laroque) decision to remove the silver medal, arguing she came for gold and the disappointment of coming in second was overwhelming. I call BS. Learn to be a gracious winner but also a gracious loser. Sometimes it's hard to believe you could have had more impact in a team sport since obviously you can be playing your best but your team might not be, resulting in a less desirable result. But in a game where a team mostly has the opportunity to control its own destiny, when you lose you accept that. Plus it's one thing to be 2nd place when there are two teams. It's another thing when it's a multi-team tournament.

Diving in soccer.

Make the game full contact (players wear protective equipment as in hockey), problem solved.

Pro Sports are a monopoly . VERY IRRITATING AS WE PAY WAY MORE THAN WE SHOULD AS WE ARE GOUGED as the players and owners get rich EG Toronto area could easily support two hockey teams if not three

the playoff system in hockey is a ridiculous grab of money as everyone gets in and then there are the entitled pompous owners

As we are for our phone services.
As we are for gasoline.
As we are for alcohol.
As we are for banking services.

Why should sports be any different?

What have I heard during a couple of NHL games?

1) The team's record when a person scores e.g. when Auston Matthews scores, the Leafs are 10-2-1
2) The team's record when the team scores first e.g. when the Leafs score first they are 10-2-1.

In both cases, it's BS statistics. Given the number of 0-0 scores, I think soccer has the least number of scores/points. But for hockey, there are plenty of goals/points so one person has little impact and a single goal first means nothing. I saw the Leafs score first and JVR scored twice in a 4-3 loss to TB two days ago. So giving the Leafs record when JVR scores or the Leafs score first is clearly useless.

I didn't look up any stats but I am pretty sure that league wide, whichever team scores first wins a significant majority of the games.

As such scoring first is a huge factor and there is nothing wrong about commenting on that stat.

However, I do agree that some stats they quote are really stupid.

Teams that score the final goal in overtime usually win.

They need to establish themselves to the viewing public before they ever get to remain on air for any length of time.

The guys on the morning show for the FAN 590. They sound like a couple of frat boys yukking it up in Mom's basement. They too often forget that they have a listening audience interested in sports.

2. Blue Jays announcers.

1. Raptors announcers. Worst in sports when it comes to kissing the team's asses, which is why I turn the sound off while watching.

WHIP and OPS are not new baseball stats. WAR is new, or as they like to term, advanced. As are things like BABIP, wOBA, ISO, xFIP, ERA+

I love it when Shulman does the Blue Jays broadcasts. He is the best voice in professional sports as far as I'm concerned. But overall I think the Jays announcers are the worst in not being critical. Tabler by far is the biggest brown noser. My goodness I would love to hear just once anything said critical of John Gibbons managerial decisions. FFS there are so many to choose from.

Things that irritate me the most:

1. Referees/umps deciding a game.
2. Timeouts. It takes forever to play the last 2 minutes of an NBA or NFL game.
3. The cost of tickets. Directly related to the costs of insane player salaries. An average Joe NBA'er is pulling in $8M/season.
