Talk to people, especially a doctor. There are plenty of medicinal, psychological, and meditation techniques out there that help. If you aren't into meds, look into cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness.

Beyond that, healthy lifestyle and exercise help with the chemical balance in the brain that clinical depression is based on.

Get addicted to a competitive video game. Join a clan / guild and if you're good, many people will value you. At least ur teammates will...

They both are if anything, a distraction from negative thoughts.

Years ago I used to volunteer as a greeter outside the emergency room at what is now Trullium Health Partners - Queensway Health Centre. There was always a counselor on staff to deal with any walk-ins, etc. I'm presuming the same can be said for today and all hospitals.

I joined a gym and started again lifting heavy weights. Regular cycling, running, cross-country skiing helps too. And fucking, lots of fucking. I never took any medication. Don't forget clean healthy eating. Many cases of depression have their root in physical health issues.

So true for me. I started training again and always feel so much better after a good workout. Energy level goes through the roof.

I feel like working out and living a healthy lifestyle takes motivation, something depressed people lack... My only motivation for going to the gym is so I don't look like a 300lb tub of lard when I go see SPs.

If these are serious, you need serious medical help, including hospitalization. If you declare these thoughts to any medical professional, he / she will commit you to the psych ward for at least a couple of days to avoid any chance that you will act on your impulses. So go talk to a doctor and get help right away.

Avoid drinking or anything else that will lower your self control, rational thought and inhibitions.

If this is how you feel, please talk to someone. Could be anyone, from a trusted family member or friend, to contacting a professional or a help line.

This is a very serious matter, and not for armchair specialists. The person suffering from these thoughts must immediately go to a crisis centre to seek emotional help. It is not normal. Then, as many have pointed out, the professionals can help by recommending appropriate actions and treatments.

Good advice. As long as the physician will do his/her job.

Personally, I would avoid family and some friends, as they would react by saying, 'snap put of it', or just ignore the person. Been there, done that. Go straight for help at emergency crisis intervention, or, to a physician, if available in very short time frame.

Definitely get to a hospital emergency ASAP if you’re having dangerous thoughts. Mild depression (listless, lack of energy and purpose) can be helped by exercise - but if it’s a deep depression, seek help immediately. Depending upon your friends or family - I disagree with avoiding them. If they are a part of the problem, of course avoid them - but if you have a close family or even one close friend then they can support you and help you get to professional support.

The key thing is getting immediate help and unfortunately alot of times the affected person is not able to do so. The worst thing you can do is remain alone and isolated as this just magnifies the effects of the depression. If you know somebody suffering this badly intervene and get them some immediate help. Call 911 as there is always a mental health crisis squad on the road in Toronto and regions.

I suffered depression before but never to he point of killing myself luckily.
I guess there are varying degrees and this sounds serious.
As others have already suggested, it's time to talk to a professional.
Adjusting ones thinking/mindset on their own is not always an easy thing to do as suggested on Tedtalks etc.
