The competition in curling has gotten fierce. Gone are the days when Canada would steamroll to the gold. Both the men's and women's team are in tough fights. Rachel Homan is in a real dog fight against the PRC - I've never seen her look so peeved.

Always figured that Italy should medal in curling - it is after all bocci on ice.

Yes Baggio missed, but Pirlo didn't.

To be fair to Baggio, he played against Brazil with a pulled hamstring. Maldini had a leg injury against South Korea in 2002, he couldn't jump to meet the cross on the eliminating goal.

Talk about missing. Is Italy in this years World Cup? They didn't need the scoring from Seba? :sorry: :bolt:

Team Homan had a rough week and is now officially eliminated. Wonder if they had the flu or something because they seemed to be off their normal aggressive game.

Funny thing while watching hockey. I find that the larger ice surface almost seems to slow the game down.

Worst Olympian ever is hilarious!

Elizabeth Swaney in free style skiing.

Elizabeth Marian Swaney made her Olympic dream come true in Pyeongchang, South Korea, with a perfectly mediocre freestyle skiing halfpipe performance on Sunday.

The 33-year-old finished 24th and last in women's qualification, but stayed on her skis through both runs while barely attempting a trick to earn scores of 30.00 and 31.40.

Swaney, who was born and raised in the United States but represented Hungary, didn't appear to be interested in doing anything other than completing her runs without incident. She finished 13.60 points behind 23rd-placed Dana Laila Friis-Salling, who slipped on both runs.

She qualified to represent Hungary through her maternal grandparents and has also competed for Venezuela. In 2010 at the age of 25, Swaney switched from skeleton to skiing.

For Swaney, it was quantity over quality on her path to Olympic qualification. She booked her ticket by consistently finishing in the top 30 at World Cup events with pedestrian runs that ensured she didn't fall and always recorded a score.

Her best-ever finish came at Secret Garden in China with a 13th-place result in a 15-athlete field, but she did this while most of the Olympic contenders were competing elsewhere. Avoiding going against the sport's top athletes seemed to be part of her strategy.

Qualification for the Olympics requires achieving a certain number of top-30 World Cup finishes, and Swaney achieved 13 of them just by turning up and competing at events where there were less than 30 athletes competing.

The Harvard grad funded her pursuit through online donations.

She's received a mix of love and hate online. Many point out her use of loopholes to reach Pyeongchang, while others simply respect her hustle.

Despite garnering the wrong kind of attention for her runs, her Olympic competitors didn't seem to take offence to her presence.

"If you are going to put in the time and effort to be here, then you deserve to be here as much as I do," said Canada's Cassie Sharpe, who went on to win gold in the event.

If nothing else, Swaney put on an Olympic-level lesson in how to work smarter, not harder.

The Bocci Club will be empty this summer, it's going to be bizarre.

I watched Cassie Sharpe's dominant performance in the half pipe. Obviously she benefited from own the podium. I still remember when Donovan Bailey implored Jean Chretien not to cut funding to athletics. Canada went through an extended fallow period after that.

Canada beats Finland and advance to the Semi-finals in Men's hockey. Germany upsets Sweden and will play Canada next.

From what I saw, not just last night's game, they were missing a ton of shots that are usually gimmes. It looked like they never figured out the ice all week.

USA finally beats Canada to win gold in women's hockey. Canada had won 4 straight gold medals.

Suck it up, we're second best. Here is the truth about last night's/this morning's Canada/USA hockey game.

The score flattered us. The best team won and should have won by a much larger margin. The US are faster, better conditioned, more composed with the puck, understand what puck possession means, better coached and know how to take a face-off. Listening to the media today you would think we were robbed of a win, LMAO. Nik Kypreos (Hockey Central) was one of two media people I heard today who seemed to have actually watched the game and understood how outclassed we were skill wise. The other person was JD Bunkis on the good show who said "the 4 on 4 overtime was like an 18 minute powerplay for the US before they got called for a penalty". Mark Lee and Cassie Campbell were so oblivious to the one sided affair...at the beginning of overtime Mark Lee asks her "with the big ice surface who do you think is at an advantage playing 4 on 4?" ... Cassie replied whoever wins. I am sure the face-off percentage was 80/20 in favour of the US. I give our goalie some credit, she played very well before the shootout. But, allowing 3 goals in 6 shots is not going to win you any shootouts. But the world didn't crumble, the sun still rose this morning, we should be proud of the silver, we will live to fight again...but the US is leaving us behind in Women's hockey and we are going to see the gap get bigger and bigger.

I agree with blueray. That OT was all USA. Canada played like they did not want to lose as opposed to wanting to win.

Cassie Campbell is useless.

If anything the Shootout would been Canada's only hope for the win because Canada was outplayed and out skated by the US in OT.

Canada is now in second place with 27 medals, an all time high for winter olympics.
The only proper way to evaluate how a particular country is doing in relation to previous Olympics is to compare the number of medals won as a percentage of the number of medals available.
