The only proper way to evaluate how a particular country is doing in relation to previous Olympics is to compare the number of medals won as a percentage of the number of medals available.
Ok I leave that up to you to do analysis.

Nothing to do with who was out played - the shoot out sucks shit !

It's a fucking team sport.

I don't mind the shootout , but not to decide playoff rounds, it's lame.

Suck it up, we're second best. Here is the truth about last night's/this morning's Canada/USA hockey game.

The score flattered us. The best team won and should have won by a much larger margin. The US are faster, better conditioned, more composed with the puck, understand what puck possession means, better coached and know how to take a face-off. Listening to the media today you would think we were robbed of a win, LMAO. Nik Kypreos (Hockey Central) was one of two media people I heard today who seemed to have actually watched the game and understood how outclassed we were skill wise. The other person was JD Bunkis on the good show who said "the 4 on 4 overtime was like an 18 minute powerplay for the US before they got called for a penalty". Mark Lee and Cassie Campbell were so oblivious to the one sided affair...at the beginning of overtime Mark Lee asks her "with the big ice surface who do you think is at an advantage playing 4 on 4?" ... Cassie replied whoever wins. I am sure the face-off percentage was 80/20 in favour of the US. I give our goalie some credit, she played very well before the shootout. But, allowing 3 goals in 6 shots is not going to win you any shootouts. But the world didn't crumble, the sun still rose this morning, we should be proud of the silver, we will live to fight again...but the US is leaving us behind in Women's hockey and we are going to see the gap get bigger and bigger.
I agree with blueray. That OT was all USA. Canada played like they did not want to lose as opposed to wanting to win.

Cassie Campbell is useless.
Going to a shootout is a disgrace, for any sport. I can't believe World and Euro Cups have been decided on penalty shootouts.

Canada has historically been 2nd best when it comes to women's hockey. The US wins the world championships most of the time and is ranked higher. However, that means nothing during the game itself. For those of you who think the Canadians played worse and didn't deserve to win, that's BS. They played hard and kept in it (they were ahead on the scoresheet for most of the game). Yes the US played much better in the OT but they failed to score - or you could say Canada defended well enough. Defense is always just as important as offense. So why should the US deserve to win? They don't. The OT should have continued until a team scored. If you are using shootout's to decide, skip it and just give teams a deck of cards and let them draw for high card. A team who wins at a shootout doesn't necessarily deserve to win.

They were saying in a newspaper that shootouts are used to end games since they don't want to go well overtime and delay others. Makes sense except there was nothing afterwards so some stupid reasoning being used.

I remember there being a few teams in major soccer tournaments that made it obvious they were looking to do nothing offensively and win in the shootout. An interesting strategy but I don't think anyone would ever say a team is the best because they do better at a shootout - so why have that be the outcome by allowing it?

Canada has historically been 2nd best when it comes to women's hockey.
????

That would have been our 5th consecutive gold.

Did Bettman get the upper hand?

Evidently attendance has been way down for hockey with some record low attendance. Fasel is trying to downplay it but I think it cost the IOC more than the NHL. If the IOC approaches the NHL first, Bettman will probably be able to squeeze them. Love him or hate him, you have to give him credit for usually getting the best deal.

I know we were not happy with no NHL there but this may help secure a more permanent situation for us to see best on best. Short term pain for long term gain.

If Calgary gets the 2026 Olympics the NHL will be there for sure.

Unlike basketball, hockey needs to be a stand alone sport. I'm fine with not sending NHL players to the Olympics as long as they keep it up with the World Cup. It's the best way to grow the game globally. Look what happened to rugby after they instituted a WC.

This was the best winter games for Canada by medal count of 29. If your a curling fan, it was the worst Olympic games. If Canada got 2 more medals from curling we would have 31.

Take the time to investigate. Even the 2-1 win in the prelims, the US had more shots. For some reason, Canada seems to be extremely effective when it comes to the Olympics but outside of that the US is more often on top.

FYI, the Olympic phenomenon is not unique to women's hockey. There are a couple of other sports where the medalists aren't at the top throughout the year but rise to the occasion at the Olympics. Doesn't mean they are the best, just the best for that day/tournament. And then there's short track speed skating where the best can get knocked down by someone who's worse, losing their chance to win. I remember the funniest race from a past Olympics where the in the final of a race, the first 3 competitors were well ahead of the 4th but a massive crash resulted in the 4th place person winning the gold. The others scrambled to get up and limped over the line to get 2nd and 3rd. In a race, which is mostly based on speed, the 4th place person had zero chance but got "lucky" because he/she was so behind (can't remember if it was men/women). Gold doesn't necessarily mean you are the best.

I think you are trying to remember Stephen Bradbury from Australia who won short track speed skating gold many years ago

I did. You won't like it.

Canada has won 10 World championships to the U.S 7 along with the 4 consecutive Olympics before this year.

That argument is out the window.

Even the 2-1 win in the prelims, the US had more shots.
Is that what determines the better team, shots? FYI goalies are a part of the team, not just the players taking shots. I guess you could say that Canada outgoaltended them. Our goalies made more saves.

Another argument out the window.

Gold doesn't necessarily mean you are the best.
What about 4 golds in a row. Also meaningless? They got lucky 4 times in a row? Hahahaha.

What does? Shots on goal and your opinion determine who is best because you have no actual facts?

BTW, in almost every sport, a win at the Olympics ranks higher than at an annual world championship so extra credit to our women for those 4 consecutive Olympic golds.

I could even accept that the two teams are basically even but your assertion that Canada is historically 2nd best in women's hockey is laughable. Go argue with the SPs some more in that other thread. You have a better chance there.
