Bravo for Memo and "The Shape of Water" with 13 nominations. Only one short of the record of 14 achieved by "Titanic" and "Ben Hur".

I'm thinking Memo gets Best Director but "3 Billboards" gets the Best Picture Oscar. The trend in the past few years has been to split those two up anyway. "3 Billboards" has the socio/political relevance while "Shape of Water" has the cinematic wonder. Academy members can all pat each other on the back this way.

~ Oldman for male Actor

~ McDormand for female Actor

~ Rockwell for supporting (although I'm hoping it goes to Dafoe)

~ Janney for supporting

~ Dunkirk for Cinematography

~ Shape of Water for Production Design

~ Dunkirk for Editing (great to see 'Baby Driver' recognized here)

~ Shape of Water for Score (the great Alexandre Desplat)

~ A Fantastic Woman for Foreign Film (amazingly, "In the Fade" was left out of this category (??????) and "The Square" is also very, very worthy of this award

~ Call Me by Your Name for adapted screenplay (it is the legendary James Ivory)

~ 3 Billboards for original screenplay

Although I realize that Margot Robbie is being nominated for acting rather than the truthfulness of the role, I'm still disgusted that she was nominated for the piece of "pity me" falsehood I, Tonya. There was one victim and that was Nancy Kerrigan not Tonya Harding!

Best Picture either

Dunkirk
or
Darkest Hour

Best Actor

Gary Oldman

Best Original Score and Best Sound Editing

Dunkirk

Although clearly the best is the adaptation of Elgar's Variation IX (Adagio) "Nimrod" from Enigma Variations.

I was hoping that Luca Guadagnino (Call me By Your Name) would get a directing nom, his transition to English language films has been easier than Del Toro's. P.T Anderson has done better work in the past.

When are Doug Jones and Andy Serkis going to get the acclaim they deserve, what they do is very difficult to pull off. I once saw a shitty film called Legion because Doug Jones was in it. He showed up for all of two minutes, I should have walked out after that.

Who cares. A bunch of child molesters and rapists giving each other rewards and patting one another on the ass.

It's nice to have the "one eye closed" crowd weigh in.

It could be Gigli del Toro's big night, but it also acknowledges those who helped him get there. Toronto producer J Miles Dale is up for Best Picture. He's also produced The Strain, Mama and Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. Best Screenplay is shared with Vanessa Taylor, who wrote and produced the early seasons of Game of Thrones. She left the show after Season 3.

I like Gary Oldman, I don't think he gets enough credit.

Amazing statement! Thank you for clarifying decades of my life.

Why didn't I realize this before?

As of today, I'll stop watching film, dispose of my entire library and inform my nieces and nephews I won't be watching film with them anymore in order to protect them.

I now have plenty of spare time to dedicate myself to posting on TERB and illuminating one and all of the heinous and macabre intent that screenwriters, editors and make up artists have of physically violating children and women all over the world.

Add self important and I think you’ve nailed it.

I love films, not the people who make them. The credits in Deadpool say it all for me.

Point taken OTB, but that's saying films like Dunkirk and Mudbound should not be made because Hollywood wallows in self - righteous hypocrisy.

Weinstein kept Christopher Nolan out of the Oscars because he had no influence on him. He probably won't win but I'm happy that Nolan's talent is finally being acknowledged. I'm sad that lovely Jessie didn't get a nom for Molly's Game but Mary J Blige deserved it more for Mudbound.

Deadpool didn't impress me much, an R-rated film for 14 year old boys. Logan is vastly superior.

If you want to rise in Hollywood, you have to make alliances. Daniel Craig and Jason Isaacs made the final cut to replace Pierce Brosnan as 007. Craig got the role because he had Steven Spielberg in his corner. Craig was great in Munich - close to being one of Spielberg's best films.

Christopher Nolan had Al Pacino and Robin Williams in his corner to lobby on his behalf for the Batman franchise.

Insomnia was Alfredo's project, Nolan was brought in as director for hire after Alfie fired the initial director. It was a risk for Nolan, but it paid off handsomely.

Sometimes less is more, Logan was my top film for most of 2017. Only The Shape of Water topped it. I avoided the X-Men franchise, didn't think much of Hugh Jackman. Then I saw him in Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners and he blew me away with his acting.

My problem with Jackman is that he's too handsome - he makes us ordinary guys envious. When you're that good looking, doors open for you automatically. I didn't think that he had to work very hard to become an actor, Prisoners proved that I was waaaaay off!
