If they ever put The Sopranos or Deadwood on Netflix a lot of heads are going to explode. Friends seemed pretty tame to me. Never liked it for that reason

Piece of shit show about beautiful people leading idealistic lives, millennials are smarter than I thought.

I tried watching Deadwood, after binging my way through Justified. Too pretentious, couldn't get into it. Isn't The Sopranos already on Netflix? It started out as a good show then went into overdrive in S1 E11, it became groundbreaking.

That article was piss-poor. Did anyone even bother editing it before running it?

Pure clickbait from the author of other high quality journalistic endeavours over the past 3-days, including:
-Don't s*** on my plane! Model reveals F1 champion Lewis Hamilton's bizarre rules about going to the toilet
-Helen Flanagan's pregnancy is causing the mother of headaches for Coronation Street's wardrobe department
-Gaz Beadle panics in the nappy aisle at supermarket and begs fans to help

Not a single link or even a Twitter handle for us to read these Tweets as posted in the article to determine context. In a high quality news source like The Mirror? Quelle surprise.

Were they 30-year olds trying to sound ironically idiotic in-regards to millennial sensitivities, or 15-year olds proving themselves to be overly sensitive idiots? Were they even millennials, and not x’rs or boomers with learning disabilities?

Even in the mid-90s Friends was ahead of the curve on sexuality and gender identity. To the best of my memory, the jokes when it came to Ross’ ex-wife and her partner, were not “about” lesbians, but about Ross (and co’s) inability to process it when compared to the rest of the world.

The joke wasn’t on the lesbians or transpeople, it was was on the Friends for saying/thinking the things they setup as jokes.

Anyways, these Tweets are hardly the voices that would ever be considered “THE” voices of an entire generation, yet 5x Tweets, from presumably 5 accounts, is somehow enough to write an article about this phenomena?

Pretty sure you weren't their target market.

Good points. Fact is a lot of humor is insults - we laugh at jokes because they are funny but it doesn't necessarily translate to phobias. And I think you are correct - sometimes the supposed target (in this case a lesbian couple) is not actually the target but it's a satire of how people really think.

How many shows make stereotypical jokes? A lot. But the humor is not in the stereotype - it's in the stupidity of the character making the joke thinking the stereotype is true.

I enjoyed Friends, mostly in the earlier seasons. Some of the later seasons tended to focus more on the popular characters and less so on the ones that were actually funny. I don't think it's the funniest show but like many shows it was good enough to watch. I have younger relatives who are millenials slowly going through the entire show and they like it.

Teenage fluff to me ... the premise was lame, they switched partners more than a caligula movie, the apartments and NYC life style was completely unrealistic. My favorite was at the opposite end of the spectrum - Seinfeld.

Ironic this thread just popped up. I just finished watching all 10 seasons over the past month on Netflix. I had seen many episodes in my 20's when the show was airing, but hadn't seen them all. Morbid curiosity got to me, as I only had parts of story lines, and couldn't remember if the show was funny or not.

Watching this was like torture. Phoebe and Monica's characters weren't funny at all and completely annoying. Rachael's character was slightly better I guess, but marginally. The guys had some funny moments like once every two episodes.

How on God's green earth was this show so popular? I'll never get it...

I always found Ross and Chandler to be funny. Monica was the funniest of the 3 and Rachel was IMO the worst. So of course, to my shocking surprise, Jennifer Aniston and Matt Leblanc were nominated for Emmy's.

There were some amazing shows though and some amazing lines.

"Uh yeah...IN PRISON!"
"We were on a break!"
"Now the messers become the messees!"

I think the popularity was more based on the popularity of the stars on the show. They weren't A-List when they started but they weren't nobodies either.

Bring back Married With Children! It was a great show.
Putting that show on Netflix would probably spark an Antifa riot.

These kids think Friends is too much? Best not watch Seinfeld then...
I'm curious why or are you more of a Gilligan's Island fan ?

For me on Seinfeld : If you lived in New York City, you understood the nuances referencing the city life (Puerto Rican Day Parade, parking space, Soup Nazi (great soup), etc) . The parking lot, the wait in the Chinese restaurant, dating circumstances, and characters we've all come across - most of the plots were taken from real life experiences of cast and creators which made it easy to identify by the viewing public.

Deadwood is pretentious???
Is it because they say “cocksucker” too often?
After Justified it was disappointing, I couldn't get into the "old west" patois. HBO when they run out of ideas go to extremes in language and violence. With Ian McShane and Timothy Oliphant I wanted to like it but I lost interest. I'll give it a second look.

Of course Friends wasn't for my target audience, it's a spoiled rich kids show. The Drew Carrey Show was more my speed, excellent writing and the characters weren't human mannequins.
