Not sure if this thread was already started by someone, but I’m looking to get either an echo dot or a Google Home mini. Any recommendations? The google Home looks a lot better in grey, and I’ve read that the search power is better (duh!).

The echo dot is really good if you use Amazon alot and have a prime account and it's cheaper than the Google home but now since there is a bickering going on between Google and Amazon no YouTube apps are available on any Amazon devices. Plus in term of controlling other smart devices like tv and amps or so the Google have more accessibility especially with chrome cast which is cheap to attain but with the echo you would have to get a Logitech harmony hub to control tv and such. They both have various apps for the thermostat and lighting so they are equal on that front.
Hope it helps P.S I have the dot and Google I use one upstairs and the other downstairs lol.

I don’t have a prime account; so I guess it makes the choice easier.

I did read somewhere that if both smart home devices are close by, you can ask “Hey google, what do you think of Alexa?” And after it responds, Alexa will say thanks.

I have a dot, they are $29, gave one to my 80yr old mother and Alexa understands her better than the rest of us.

Have never used Google Home (my SO hates google, thinks the are the spying evil empire)

FYI Chromecast and Google Homes reportedly overloading home Wi-Fi

"This issue stems from these devices' "Cast" feature, which sends MDNS multicast discovery packets in order to discover and keep a live connection with Google products such as Google Home. These packets [are] normally sent in a 20-second interval. However, we have discovered that the devices will sometimes broadcast a large amount of these packets at a very high speed in a short amount of time. This occurs when the device is awakened from its "sleep" state, and could exceed more than 100,000 packets. The longer your device is in "sleep," the larger this packet burst will be. This issue may eventually cause some of router's primary features to shut down—including wireless connectivity."

A fix is supposedly being released today (2018/01/18)
