Cops probably aren't happy about this, which is why we're only hearing about this now. He died last spring.

An officer with the police service’s drug squad died of a fentanyl overdose earlier this year, prompting Toronto police to conduct an investigation.

In a statement released Thursday, Acting Chief Jim Ramer said Const. Michael Thompson was found at his home in medical distress on April 20, 2017.

He was rushed to hospital, where he died three days later.

Police confirm it was later determined that Thompson died from a fentanyl overdose.

According to police, the amount of fentanyl found in his system was “too large to have been caused by mere contact with that drug.”

Ramer called the Thompson a “good police officer who was respected by his colleagues.”

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death but police say “many questions remain unanswered.”

Police say the officer had regular access to street-level drugs and added that some of the cases he was involved in were due to go before the court starting Monday.

“By working with the Crown, the Service has learned that because of his death, and the circumstances under which it happened, changes will be made to how these cases proceed, or not, through the justice system,” Ramer’s statement read.

“Our condolences remain with his colleagues, including the dedicated and professional members of the Drug Squad, Michael’s family and friends who have all been devastated by his passing.”

I'm sure all the people he busted and are awaiting trial won't shed a tear. I wonder how many cases will tossed.

Agreed, very sad. Sounds like a decent guy who gave into temptation and paid the ultimate price.

Just heard on the news that the amount found in his system could not have been caused by an accidental dose
The plot thickens
No plot. He was getting wasted on opiates

could have been someone who wanted his cases dropped. if he's dead and unable to testify, there's no evidence. if the amount of fentanyl in his system was too high to be accidental, someone could have forcibly injected him with a high amount to ensure his death
He had a HUGE amount of Fentanyl in his system.

Just saying

theres new drug making the rounds on the street now carfentanyl?(sp)
100X more potent than fentanyl and 1000 X more potent than morphine

Rumor has it there was a raid somewhere in the DR...and there was enough Carfentanyl to kill the entire population of T/O...

Every year there seems to be a new drug of choice. It's incredible that some people can't resist poisoning themselves while knowing the dangers beforehand.

People have all kinds of problems that cause them to turn to drugs or alcohol to cope, cops are no exception. I'm sorry he died before he could get help dealing with what ever lead him down that road.

GTA & Thereabouts...
To take such vast amounts makes me think he was trying to commit suicide. Probably a better way to go than shooting himself with his own sidearm.

I own rental properties, and the rumor now is that cops (and the media) are going to stop reporting on fentanyl overdoses because there's just no sense in doing it anymore.

This cop who died was anoutlier.
Its rare someone "important" dies of a drug overdose.

Nah, he was a junkie who took too many pills.

You'll be surprised how many people walk among us who are pill addicts, and who think they can handle their pill addiction
