I've historically used Western Digital Black hard drives for data storage on my PCs and have had excellent results in terms of reliability. Now my drives are starting to get long in the tooth so I want to replace them with newer drives and store my old ones as backups.

When I look at drives today I don't see many WD Black drives and/or they are super expensive. Has something changed? I see lots of Seagate drives but I have a bad impression of them, which may be dated information now.

Anyone know anything about quality hard drives for data storage? I'm looking for recommendations.

I do know that Seagate bought western dig. a few years ago and the warranty periods have come down over the years. I'd try the cloud, or even tape as well? And there is ssd but expensive for large sizes.

The danger with tapes is the media can stretch over time...

Seagate drives are now very good, its not like years ago. They've improved big time. I still have some WD raptors 10000 rpm that still work great after 10 years.

But here is more info...https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/175089-who-makes-the-most-reliable-hard-drives

I have a couple of 8 and 9 year old external Maxtor harddrives that are still working. One is actually a refurbished. Maxtor is now part of Seagate.

I have a server that has 10 or so drives in it to make up about 24TB of storage. I've tried a lot of different brands and can't say one is more reliable than the other, I just buy the cheapest Gb/$ drive I can find since it's a luck of the draw thing anyway. Very oddly I've never had a Hitachi die on me despite their reputation. WD greens are by far and away the least reliable in my experience. If you are relying on a single drive for back up (not wise) look for enterprise rated drives. Other than that look into a RAID solution where you have redundant drives. I use unraid, if a single drive fails I lose no data and can still access the dead drive data albeit slowly - the data is calculated off the other drives. When I replace the dead drive the array rebuilds the original data on the new drive. Pretty safe but only tolerant to a single drive failure at a time.

I had a bad experience with a Hitachi drive, total loss. I've had pretty good luck with Western Digital black drives (knock on wood); one failed that was a Blue WD drive but I was able to recover the data; the other was a Black WD that failed right out of the box and they replaced without any issue.

I've just bought a Seagate Backup Plus 8 TB drive ($180) purely for backup purposes so we'll see how it works out.

I too have WD external hard drives as back up, but they are getting old. Had bought them from Costco actually.

Time to look at newer ones perhaps.

Had wondered about SSD as opposed to HD

With SSD, you have much better speed or response at a premium price though.
Of course that is dependent on your system setup ( support for latest USB version).
Seagate Backup Plus 8 TB drive is pretty good for the price point ( was $189CND back in 2017NOV) and reliable.

Depends on how many TBs of data you plan to back up?

SSD drives have dropped in price but are still pricey if you get 1 TB SSDs, or more.

I still stick with regular HDDs for storage and put all important data on 3 Seagate HDDs. Always a had good luck with Seagate.

Still use an ~10 year old 160GB IDE Seagate HDD for music & photo back up.
